CHICAGO (CBS) ― Oprah Winfrey's expected announcement that she'll end her show -- and the prospect that she'll say goodbye to Chicago – has Mayor Daley placing some blame on the media.
Daley said Thursday evening he's going to call Oprah to get the real story. But he's obviously concerned that if she says farewell to this city it'll be a blow to Chicago's image.
"I think she was the most successful woman that we will ever know in the history of this country," Daley said at a fundraising event for United Negro College Fund.
The mayor says it was the flap over the show's season opener on Michigan Avenue in September that may have helped set Oprah's travel plans in stone. There was criticism about shutting down the Magnificent Mile for days for the taping. She reimbursed the city for costs related to the closure.
"That became a big rhubarb in the Chicago press -- beat up Oprah," Daley told reporters. "So you keep kicking people, people will leave, simple as that."

Nope, not by a long shot. She jumped a while ago - when W asked if she could help out early in the War in Afghanistan. The administration hoped a big name like Oprah could bring light to the horrors women were facing under the Taliban. Oprah not politely declined, scorning the potential to help out long-suffering women because she did not want to be viewed in anyway as a tool of the administration. Stop an honor killing? Not for the sake of her liberal purity. Good riddance to the bag of crap.
I think her decision has more to do with her future business plans, which have nothing to do with any existing commercial media networks.
They have to neutralize Sarah Palin.
Oprah is a woman. The Left thinks the issue is gender, being the bigots that they are.
I believe her numbers tanked after endorsing 0bama.
OT: Flipping channels last week or so I caught a couple of minutes of 0prah, (which I quit watching long ago). It was a show on fashion. Twice she flashed pictures of MO as a trendsetter; “corset” (boob) belts and “kitten heel” shoes. Disgusting!
