ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Starry-eyed children writing letters to the jolly man at the North Pole this holiday season likely won't get a response from Santa Claus or his helpers.
The U.S. Postal Service is dropping a popular national program begun in 1954 in the small Alaska town of North Pole, where volunteers open and respond to thousands of letters addressed to Santa each year. Replies come with North Pole postmarks.
Last year, a postal worker in Maryland recognized an Operation Santa volunteer there as a registered sex offender.

Zer0 and Dead Fish and Axle Shaft killed Santa?
What were the odds on that?
maybe Santa needs some stimulus $ from the Obama stash.
The polar ice cap melted and Santa fell in and drowned.
Ever think of running the workers through a data base BEFORE you hire them??
One wonders what other agencies both private and public, would need to be shut down, if this rule of thumb were used across the board.
Just last week I ordered three “Letters from Santa” for my youngest grandchildren from the “North Pole” web site. I’ve been doing it for 28 years for all my grandchildren. Never had a problem. I wonder if I’ll get my $30 back.
Some people ruin all the fun.
Well no offense to anyone, but perhaps with the Post Office wasting money that causes their critical functions to suck, it may not be a bad idea for them to get out of this program.
Besides this is something we can all do for our kids anyway. We don’t need government to do it. The letter doesn’t HAVE to have a postal stamp on it, Stampin Up probably has a stamp that could suffice if you have to stamp it with anything special.
And since they aren’t replacing it with “Letters from Kwanzaa” or “Mohammed sends His Blessings” or some other program, I have no problem with them dropping it.
I think it’s a perfect opportunity for parents to become involved in generating the Christmas spirit in their kids.
AFAIK Canada Post still answers Santa letters. The address is:
