The Senate voted to end debate and move to a final vote on President Obama’s first judicial nominee, former ACORN fundraiser Judge David F. Hamilton, who disallowed invoking Jesus' name in prayers in the Indiana Legislature. Ten Republicans voted to allow a floor vote on Hamilton's nomination, thus assuring his confirmation.

Hamilton, nominated to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, won a 70-29 cloture vote. All 29 who voted against cloture were Republicans. while 10 Republicans joined with all 60 Senate Democrats to vote for cloture and allow the confirmation vote to proceed. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchiso (R.-Tex.) did not vote on the cloture motion.

The 10 Republicans who joined the majority Democrats in voting for cloture were Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Susan Collins (R-Me.), John Cornyn (R-Tex.), Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Olympia Snow (R-Me.), John Thune (R-S.D.) and Richard Lugar (R-Ind.).

I don’t think these Congressmen know what the heck is going on! They should! It’s their job!

Of course. Sessions made a valiant try, but he couldn't hold up the vote forever. Bless him.

Voting for cloture is standard procedure and hardly a crime against humanity. I would expect all but Snowe and Collins to vote against Hamilton. You can never predict where they will fall. Orrin Hatch gave an incredible speech yesterday denouncing him. As did John Cornyn.

Hutchison is the poster child for loser and Cornyn has feet made of clay.

I have to laugh at the current Hutchison campaign add for governor ...”she is making a political sacrifice to stay in the Senate to carry on her fight against health care reform”.

GAG.

In the Senate, voting for cloture is voting for the bill, or voting for the confirmation in most cases. The Dims understood that and voted against cloture on many Bush nominees, effectively keeping quite a few from confirmation.

Just one reason why Republicans stay behind the Dims in the ongoing battle for the federal court system.

You keep making these stupid, blank statements without knowing anything you're talking about. Jeff Sessions held up the nomination as long as possible and has campaigned relentlessly against Hamilton, but Republicans are the minority and have no long-term power to stop anything.

Its idiots who assist the election of Democrats by claiming the Republicans aren't conservative enough, who are the problem.

You're a nitwit who can't understand anything beyond what's going on at a given moment. There was no reason for all those Republicans to vote to end debate on one of the most radical court nominees yet, whether or not they had the votes to continue debate. They need to learn to vote their beliefs even when they lose the vote. The Dims take great advantage of Republicans and their great appreciation for 'comity', which the Dims don't let get in their way.

Constitutionally, I do not believe that a 2/3 vote should be the bar for judicial appointments. No Republican voting for cloture should be dinged for a Constitutionally informed vote, no matter how bad the judicial candidate.
