The World's Largest Shopping Mall (is in China and its empty!)
PBS Website ^ | August 2009 | PBS Documentary

Posted on 11/17/2009 1:35:25 PM PST by grayhog

This mall is 2x the size of the Mall of the America's and it is empty. Pretty jarring video (its 13 mins long). Interesting companion to the report on the city for 1 million people in China that is also empty (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2388274/posts).

Funny to watch the teletubby guy jumping around trying to look happy and entertain the non-existant kids in the empty mall.

Reminds me of the supermarkets in Cuba with no food or cities in N. Korea with no people in them.

They have to buy their GPS’ and none of them can pass their driving test...hence, no way to get to the mall :(

That may be one of the most depressing things that I have ever seen. With all the power to do good, an empty mall is built in no where.

ugh

This is the kind of thing PBS would “cover”. The emphasis here is...a failure of capitalism...though the failure is that of a planned, centralized, economy.

Today...CNN is calling the Ft Hood terrorist a “conservative”. I’m not kidding. That’s the kind of media we have today.

Funny how they credit capitalism for the failure of this great huge mall...If you ask me you don’t even have to take Economics 101 to find out what is really wrong with this mall...it’s simple: location, location, location... it’s as plain as the nose on the chinese faces (oh wait)

I would guess that they might have more shoppers if they paid the working people in China more. Even in countries with a real middle class it is hard to keep a mall going, it must be very frustrating without the average Chung, Chang and Wu having the money to blow at the mall. Maybe the government could force the people to smile and act like they are shopping there for the next documentary.

They built an entire modern city with that Mall in it but until they get people to live there they connot attracts business. The apartments are all sold but mostly my speculators.

The people in the nearby city want to go there but dare not until there are more people and businesses - so it is in limbo.

Exactly. I think it's pretty clear where the failure lies. If it was truly capitalism, the developer would go bust, and they'd auction off the remains. But no, instead that mega-mall is propped up by government subsidies and loan guarantees! Like, oh, uh, General Motors. Just as failed, and just as now-Socialist.
