Paterson Calls Obama Wrong on 9/11 Trial
New York Times ^ | November 16, 2009 | Danny Hakim

Gov. David A. Paterson on Monday criticized the Obama administration’s decision to try five men linked to the Sept. 11 attacks in a civilian court in Manhattan.

His comments made him one of a few Democrats to take that stand and underscored his schism with the White House.

“This is not a decision that I would have made,” the governor said. “New York was very much the epicenter of that attack; over 2,700 lives were lost.”

“It’s very painful,” he added. “We’re still having trouble getting over it. We still have been unable to rebuild that site, and having those terrorists tried so close to the attack is going to be an encumbrance on all New Yorkers.”

The decision to try the men in New York rather than in a military tribunal, made public on Friday by the United States attorney general, Eric H. Holder Jr., drew mixed reactions from lawmakers and victims’ families. Some have questioned why the five terrorism suspects, including Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the self-described mastermind of the attacks, are being afforded civilian trials.

A number of Republicans have assailed the move, including former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, who is weighing a run for governor next year, while Democrats have been largely supportive and have defended the president.

Mr. Paterson is not the only Democrat to raise questions about the move: Senator Jim Webb, Democrat of Virginia, has said that military commissions were a more appropriate venue.

Paterson has been pretty outspoken since Obama threw him under the bus.

Let’s just say it. These scumbags confessed, asked to meet their 72 virgins, they should be dead already. I’m all for entertaining our “guests” wishes.

This is the extreme left going after the Bush administration. My hatred for 0 grows daily.

Good for Paterson. I dearly hope he wins the primary next year. Maybe he can use this issue to trumpet his victory.

Then I want Rudy to come in and smush him in the governor’s race.

An interesting note is that Patterson said, as reported in an article elsewhere, that he had been “warned by the White House six months ago that this situation might arise.”

Anybody who thinks this was just a random decision by a radical left-wing terrorist-supporting Attorney General is a fool - it was a fully thought-out decision by his radical left-wing terrorist-supporting boss and the people who run him.

I’m glad Patterson is doing the right thing and not supporting this decision (a move that I think will also get him a lot of support among New Yorkers), but I don’t see how he or anybody could claim to be surprised by it.

Thanks for the background info, I'd missed it entirely. It's quite interesting to see a Democrat governor publically disagreeing with this administration, and it will be very interesting to see what future impact this opposition will really have among his voters.

The Chicago gang of characters currently occupying the White House frequently appear so very provincial, so very adolescent, so utterly reactionary should anybody anywhere dare to 'dis' them -- isn't it genuinely juvenile in many respects?

What's almost scary to me is that they give the impression that they are entirely oblivious to the adolescent impression they are conveying to the adults of the world.

Just clueless...

I think they're so blinded by their ideology - not neglecting to mention the fact that I think Obama himself is a seriously unstable, delusional personality - that they simply don't care.

Thank you so much for the reply to my observation - it's very helpful. While I can see that BHO displays obvious characteristics of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, it's impossible to believe that the entire crew has it, and is just hiding the blatant signs he so frequently overty exhibits.

But yes... to be utterly blinded by one's ideology... that makes perfect sense. They're a batch of authentic True Believers, LOL.

First, let me say, that I think what Patterson said, is right. We dont want it here.

However, part of me wonders, if he is just trying to get even with Obozo, for not minding his own business about what goes on in this state...and so he could get the support of all of the New Yorkers, who dont want the trial here either.

If they MUST try these men in court...then it should be in DC. The crime was against the country..the USA..NOT NY.

Well, gee, governor! How about growing a spine??

Demonstrate to everybody that NEW YORK IS A SOVEREIGN STATE. Just declare that the feds WILL NOT bring terrorists into your state, then back it up.

I thought New Yorkers had some guts. Maybe not.
