Experts question motives of mammogram guidelines (Here comes healthcare rationing)

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Cancer experts fear new U.S. breast imaging guidelines that recommend against routine screening mammograms for women in their 40s may have their roots in the current drive in Washington to reform healthcare.

Critics of the guidelines, issued on Monday by the U.S. Services Task Force, an independent panel sponsored by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Quality, say the new guidelines are a step backward and will lead to more cancer deaths.

Here are some of their concerns.

* Dr Carol Lee, chairwoman of the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Commission, said she fears insurers -- both private and public -- will use them to pare back health costs.

"These new recommendations seem to reflect a conscious decision to ration care," Lee said in a statement.

Yeah, let’s throw the women with breast cancer under the bus just like in Great Britain.

National Health Care

"Doctor, I have a lump in my breast."

"Don't worry about it. Take two aspirin."

Sums it up.

See ladies, in so many cases, those annoying old mammograms aren't making you well anyway. It will be a much better use of our scarce national bugetary resources to target the use of mammography to those who are really at risk. Patients who fall into this catagory would naturally include female Senators and Congresspersons, and the wives and daughters of male Members of Congress. Additionally, many Cabinet members and sub-Cabinet positions will probably be found to be at risk. Female members of the families of the leaders of the major labor unions will undoubtedly be found to be at risk as well.

These cancer experts will soon be found floating in the Chicago River with a “self-inflicted gunshot wound” to the backs of their heads.

They also recommended that docs quit telling women to do breast self exams. Now those are free!! So I guess they want to ration actions so that no cancer is found before its time.

This is beyond disgusting.

My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer and ultimately had bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and 33 radiation treatments. This was after a yearly checkup for several years that showed nothing and then it was there. Although she is in her 50’s, it is a frightful declaration from some “health panel” in this government that made my wife angry, scared and very concerned for women younger than her. I am in the health field myself and I know there is a ton of research out there that supports yearly mammograms even for women in their forties. What the cancer society should do is come out with a statement tomorrow saying that they found that it was not necessary for congressmen to have prostate checks until after 80, as your insurance just won’t cover it.

"The USPSTF recommendations are a step backward and represent a significant harm to women's health," Dr W. Phil Evans, president of the Society of Breast Imaging, said in a statement.

"At least 40 percent of the lives saved by mammographic screening are of women aged 40-49. These recommendations are inconsistent with current science and apparently have been developed in an attempt to reduce costs. Unfortunately, many women may pay for this unsound approach with their lives."

According to the libs and Pelosi who will tax your tampons as medical devices, rationed care is good care.

Trust them.

Well, SOMEONE’s got to pay, and guess who Obama has decided that’s going to be. Hint: Not Obamacare.

Yep- self-exams are worthless because o is laying the groundwork for the changes he wants. The two people that have had breast cancer in my family found the lumps with their self=exam.

Oh that’s right—that can’t be because some lackey on o’s team says so.

"These new recommendations seem to reflect a conscious decision to ration care,"

Why, yes, it does.

Now I wonder why that is.

my sister’s was found by her dog,,not kidding. He kept pushing his nose in on her breast and had never done that in the years they had him. He idd it at every opportunity he had. Finally she felt it after weeks of his doing this.

But it is a free thing, everyone has been told for years to do it and how to do it.

So it isn’t saving money here. It is delaying diagnosis and treatment.

I haven’t used the word “evil” to describe these people but now it is inescapable. They want delayed diagnosis and then will use the excuse that if treatment doesn’t “cure”, it shouldn’t be used.

This is the most vile thing I have ever read about. Just unbelievable.

This is ludicrous. A baseline mammogram should be done at 35-40.

True, it is rationing. They also upped the recommendations to later in life for colon cancer screening for men.

And they’ll be able to deny treatment because it is “end of life”.

This is no “health panel”. Death panel is more like it.
