Going Rogue: Sarah Palin's autobiography

Giles Whittell in Washington

Taken at face value — as it begs the reader to do — Sarah Palin’s non-fiction debut is a love story. She is in love with Alaska, America and her husband, Todd, she says. In the process, she cannot help revealing that she is also in love with the vortex of briefers, make-up artists and media attention that spun around her for three months as a vice-presidential candidate, even though some of the principal players set out to destroy her before the election had even been lost.

Taken as a meta-manifesto for Palin’s political future, this book is as clear an announcement as her supporters could wish for that, given half a chance, she’s gonna run.

Going Rogue: An American Life is a substantial book considering the thinness of its source material. It is a big, boisterous, bitchy memoir written in four months about a life still only half-lived — the life of a woman whose job attracted little attention outside her home state until she received a call on her BlackBerry at the Alaska State Fair in August 2008.

Many attacks on Palin reek of plain snobbery. Apparently her different background is a reason enough to diss and dismiss her. Attacks more on style than substance. And what about these people who keep saying that she will make the world a dangerous place? Zero is already making it very dangerous, economically and geopolitically. They will have to shut up, once oh-so intellectual Obama adventure runs its course and leave wrecks all over the world.

Perhaps an honest retort to this Limey Snob could be:

Dear Lord Soarbottom,

Sorry about the awful things that happened to you in the Public Schools, and all that.

But it's not cricket to hate women because of it.

You were one yourself, kind of.

Remember?

Love,

The Vicar.

Zero wrote two books about himself while he was a nobody. I think Palin writing one book about her short, failed VP run should hardly be objectionable.

This guy’s just jealous that Sarah’s a prettier woman than he is.

it’s amazing how it’s acceptable to use a term like bitchy and no one thinks anything of it. Would he ever call Dream From My Father a “insert n-word or any other derogatory term for blacks here” memoir?

I never really paid attention all that much to sexism until the Clinton and Palin episodes. But it is alive and well.

As long as the copy the guy read got accounted for as a sale, that’s all that matters. The fact that it’s being reviewed in the UK alone is a big deal. I imagine most US books aren’t. Only the ones that are a big deal.

Imagine if someone in the media called Obama “uppity” yet for some reason, misogynistic behavior towards Palin is perfectly acceptable.

Unfortunately there’s plenty of examples.

You had liberal comedienne Sandra Bernhard threatening her with being gang raped.

You had Obama supporters and campaign workers showing up at events wearing tshirts calling her a c—t(about the worst thing you can call a woman, easily the equal of the n word). If some McCain supporter showed up with a Barack Obama is a N tshirt, McCain would have been drummed out of the Senate that day.

You had late night comedians calling her a slut, a whore, a bitch, and just about anything else you can imagine.

She should call them on it. She should go on Barbara Walters or Oprah and show her the pictures of the Obama supporters wearing the tshirts, the newspaper articles of Bernhrad calling for her to be gang raped. Ask them if they think it’s acceptable. Neither of them probably even know about it, because the media never said anything baout it and did their best to hide it.

Plenty of other examples. Plenty done towards Hillary as well. Many of them directed by the Obama campaign, if not by Obama himself. Deep down, Bill and Hillary know who the real Obama is. They have something up their sleeve.

He’s really a total charlatan. He’s actually brought me to a point where I would jump at the idea of Hillary as President, and would be jump even higher at the idea of the return of Bill, and I never thought that would be possible. A complete fraud in so many ways.

Hopefully the public is beginning to see through him. They have in NJ and VA. Unemployment and the record deficit will begin to make an impression on people, even if the media tries to hide them. Notice how the papers or TV never talk about either of them.

Obama and his people are the masters of deflection. And they get lucky as well. The same day we have 10% unemployment, the Ft Hood thing happens and no one mentions unemployment. Then he’s in Asia and no one mentions the deficit or spending or jobs. Then he gives a speech on something and people move on. Or he’s on his way to losing a can’t lose election and the market crashes by 3000 pts and we have the biggest collapse in 75 years. His luck is really something.
