WASHINGTON (CNN) Fewer than three in 10 Americans think Sarah Palin's qualified to be president, according to a new national poll - the least of any of the five potential candidates included in the survey.
But another woman tops that list in the CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday: two-thirds of the public thinks that Secretary of State HIllary Clinton's qualified for the Oval Office. That's more than Vice President Joe Biden, who's currently next in line for the presidency.
According to the poll, 28 percent of Americans say Palin is qualified to run the White House, with seven in 10 saying the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee is not qualified.
The survey indicates that a majority of Republicans, 54 percent, feel Palin is qualified, with 44 percent indicating she isn't. But only 29 percent of independent voters questioned feel she is qualified to serve as president, with 68 percent disagreeing. According to the poll, nine in 10 Democrats feel Palin is not qualified.
The poll's release comes one day before the release of Palin's book, "Going Rogue: An American Life."

“McCain would be the exception (although you call him a RINO, I dont). I supported him with notable reservations.”
Excuse me? You started the McCain List as soon as the Primary started.
“But if by RINO you mean Huckabee and Romney then I dont agree.”
Right, well I remember when you were shilling for RINO McCain you were calling Romney liberal.
Back to McCain...the man showed nothing but contempt for conservatives throughout his career, whether kissing ass of the media or writing bills with the Democrats libs. If Palin would not have run with him, he never would have had the small opportunity to pull ahead. Of course the economy ended any chance, but prior to that McCain’s campaign was DOA...when Palin was picked, the conservatives held their nose to beat Obama.
“You follow politics so you know the rationale for her resigning as Governor.”
Let me ask you honestly: what do you think is going to happen if she is president? I can tell you that the onslaught will be considerably more ferocious. That is a real question that I guarantee will be asked of her not only at GOP debates and by GOP contenders (and non-contenders) but by the Obama campaign and by liberal national debate moderators. She’s going to have to come up with a pretty convincing answer, and in this age of sound bites, one that is concise and understandable.
It is so nice to see you dedicated RomneyBOTs
on attack for your Master against Gov. Palin.
We’re 3 years out. It will be a non issue except for the liberal/socialist base of the Dem Party.
Her answer is and has been, "So I could fight." The longer explantion follows, but is quite reasoned. But the soundbite, "So I could fight" followed by the fact that she continues to fight is not only concise and understandable, but also quite admirable.
I’m going to let Newsweak and CNN pick our nominee again. It worked out so well in 2008 with McCain.
Yes, because the field was set when the primary started (minus Fred's late entry which few could have predicted). I am presented with a question and can make up my mind shortly, so sue me.
“Right, well I remember when you were shilling for RINO McCain you were calling Romney liberal.”
I said Romney has a liberal record. I don't think I ever said flat-out Romney was a liberal.
“the man showed nothing but contempt for conservatives throughout his career”
I don't care what he says I care what he does. He was to the right of Bush on fiscal policy, so I'd say that counted for an awful lot. I ruled out (in retrospect wrongly) Giuliani and Romney for having both too liberal histories and not having been lifelong GOPers. I ruled out Gilmore, Tommy Thompson, Paul, Hunter, Tancredo, Keyes for being either too lightweight or too quirky. Fred Thompson ruled himself out de facto with his abortive entry. Huckabee I ruled out on more tenuous grounds that a Southern evangelical was no way to win the presidency after Bush. After that it was easy. In retrospect I expected Hillary to be the nominee (higher negatives), McCain to run a stronger general campaign, and not for the market to crash. If I had to do it again I probably would not have picked McCain but one vote would not have made the difference and he still would've won the primary.
“Back to McCain...”
Enough reminiscing.
That doesn’t quite settle it. There are many logical challenges one could follow up with that answer.
Not a Romney bot. I’m a no official horse in this race thank you very much bot.
Exactly. Of course, whether Obama was qualified was never a concern for them. His skin color was the only qualifier.
“It will be a non issue”
The heck it will be. It will be an issue in the GOP primary and the general election if nominated. Take it to the bank.
Your attempts at demoralizing Palin supporters are futile. Muhaha-hahahaha!
If your bets are win, place, show, my money is on 100 to place....
You can't file bogus ethics charges against the President.
I can tell you that the onslaught will be considerably more ferocious
It's already ferocious now. Ever heard of the law of diminishing returns?
It'll be an issue used in desperation by the opposition.
Too bad they don’t announce the final tallies for the veepstakes!
I think Jindal is the heavy favorite at this point, but McDonnell is definitely a contender. McD ran a superb campaign.
Great post, bumping for future reference. You said it much better than I.
Those are all valid points. On the point of it being from an “ethics charges” angle they (Obama camp, debate mods) may just play the generic “can she take the heat” angle.
If her answer is convincing, certainly.
