Is it worse for a Republican to have been caught naked on camera or to support gay marriage? Meghan McCain weighs the hypocrisy of the Carrie Prejean scandal.
BY MEGHAN MCCAIN
If youre a Republican, is it better to be in favor of gay marriage or to make a sex tape? That is the question. At least thats the question that comes to mind after the reaction to the news that anti-gay marriage champion Carrie Prejean made a sex tape. After watching several of Prejeans media appearances this week, it was not her incredibly uncomfortable threat to walk out on Larry King that had me most unnerved; it was actually her appearance on Sean Hannity's show. This was Prejeans first stop on her book publicity tour, and when the sex tape came up, he proceeded to ask her if she was "in love with her boyfriend at the time that she made [it]." Im sorry, why would being in love matter when it comes to filming yourself in a sexual context?
Frankly, I am sick of all the hypocrisy when it comes to sex and politics in this countryand that goes for all politicians, not just Republicans. Carrie Prejean claims making that tape was the biggest mistake of her lifeits the same one that many other girls have madebut it has since come out that she may have made seven other sex tapes and posed for 30 nude photos.
So I want to send this message to my little sister and other women reading this right now: Making a sex tape is never acceptable. I don't care how in love you are with your boyfriend. Jennifer Lopez made a tape with her then-husband on their honeymoon and she is currently in a lawsuit to prevent it from being released. I am of the mind-set that you should never record anything in private that you wouldn't mind the whole world to see. Because somehow, some day, those images will find their way to the public.
I know Ive learned my lesson after posting a now-notorious photograph of myself on Twitterand I had all of my clothes on. So this is not a good message for Sean Hannity to send, that if you were in love with your boyfriend it is OK. These tapes and photographs can ruin your career and your credibility, but its the laissez faire attitude toward them that I find so upsetting.
I find it even more disturbing that as long as you oppose gay marriage, filming yourself having sex is taken more lightly. Does anyone else see the hypocrisy in this kind of thinking? And hypocrisy is something the Republican Party cant afford to have right now as the GOP struggles to find its identity. As I said, we all make mistakes and I don't want to be too harsh on Carrie Prejean. She is only 22, after all, and a former Miss California USA, not a politician. And lest we forget, she feels the same way about gay marriage that our own president does.
The problem I have with my fellow Republicans is why gay marriage is the trump card in any situation. It seems that as long as you are against gay marriage, any scandal in your life can be overlooked or overcome. When you are in favor of it, howeverand I have been very vocal about my supportthat position defines you.
Sometimes I wonder if I were against marriage equality, whether it would make it easier for some Republicans to accept my place within this party. I have to constantly remind people of my pro-life, pro-small government stance because the only view that seems to matter is the fact that I believe my gay friends should have the same right to one of our founding idealsthat all men are created equal with certain inalienable rights. I think if Republicans truly believe in keeping government out of our livesthat should include not dictating who one can marry.
Many believe that it was Carrie Prejeans anti-gay marriage views that cost her the Miss USA pageant earlier this year. My question is: When it comes to Republicans, is your position on gay marriage what determines your fate within the party?
Meghan McCain is a columnist for The Daily Beast. Originally from Phoenix, she graduated from Columbia University in 2007. She is a New York Times bestselling children's author, previously wrote for Newsweek magazine, and created the Web site mccainblogette.com.
Didn’t Megan Mccain got in to trouble for posting revealing pictures of her boobs in Twitter recently?
Then why all this lecture from Megan about morals.
She probably is jealous that she is not attractive like Carrie to get a good looking bf worthy of making a sex tape with. Jealousy and insecurity about her looks is what drives Meghan McCain mad.
Most excellent!!
Most excellent!!
I don’t think the minor featured in kiddie porn is usually arrested for it. They are considered to be a victim.
As for the boyfriend she sent them to, there are statutory rape laws, at least in California. If he was significantly older than her and solicited the pics, by all means, prosecute him. If he was the same age, younger, or not more than a couple of years older than her, it’s considered a non-abusive relationship and he’s in the clear.
Perhaps you think significantly older men who have teen girls send them naked photos are not sexually abusing them. If so, you are terribly wrong.
As for those who copied and distributed the photos, absolutely they should be prosecuted. They don’t have a right to copy people’s pictures and sell them.
“Carrie was 17, boyfriend was around 25, also illegal.
...which means Carrie and bf are guilty of making child pornography, plus the bf guilty of rape.”
Carrie is not guilty of making child porn. She is the victim of it in this situation.
You put your finger on it. McCainette sets up a false dichotomy in order to attack people who oppose "gay marriage" (</oxymoron>) but manages to kludge it up anyway.
The real answer is that no, people need not assume that private tapes are going to go public. Yes, the risk is there, but arrangements can be made to keep that kind of material secure. And no, it is not a moral indictment (which is where Meghan wants to go) or an indictment of common sense (what she'll settle for) for a married man and woman, in their own private rooms, to make such a tape, if they want to.
This is a question of quod licet Jovi, non licet bovi: married people are allowed to do X if they want to. Homosexual unmarried people are not allowed to do Y, by law and by custom. End of story.
Except for Nidiots like McCainette who come along later and wonder, after having been on the wrong side of an important social issue, why they don't have more stroke within a conservative political party. For them, perhaps a little remedial political education is in order. She could start with logic.
You are consistent but also wrong. She made the tape on her own and sent it to her bf on her own and I can show you many cases of minors prosecuted for taking pictures of themselves. When she sent them to her bf, she became guilty of distribution, the most serious offense. At 17 she would most likely be prosecuted as an adult for distribution and plead guilty to some lesser crime. My point is you can’t resolve in her support at all without fudging either the law or the facts.
That TMZ took possession of tapes that they knew to be illegal, regardless of whether they show them, is interesting. That they have not been prosecuted shows that one side has an interest in the existence of them to embarass her even while her notoriety keeps her out of court, while the other side prefers to gloss over that she is a cp distributor for which any anonymous 17-year-old would get a lifelong criminal record.
BINGO.
Where's the correlation?
What?
Coming up with lame linkages between fact A and fact B?
Logic?
Yeah... Sure...
Wow she is just a twit.
It’s unfortunate that Carrie Prejean didn’t live the life of Christ before making the most politically incorrect statement of all politically incorrect statements (a prerequisite before you can have an opinion on anything these days it appears).
Even if she had, the sodomite left would still HATE her with all the passion they have in their spineless bodies.
what a clueless twit!
Meghan, you’re just jealous... and mad you didn’t make a couple tapes yourself .. but you didn’t have any boyfriends sooo....
What a silly person.
Aren’t her fifteen minutes up yet?!!
This from a tramp that recently flashed her cleavage online?
Why is Meghan making slurs about premarital sex? What about extra marital sex and her own dad? Didn’t he have several affairs? I haven’t seen her showing off her implants on camera (thank God!), but doesn’t that also make her a bit of a hypocrite? I thought Carrie’s sex tapes were solo acts meant to entice, isn’t that what Meghan was doing when she was pushing her fake boobs in the camera? I think she’s jealous of Carrie because she’s so pretty and even though she (obviously) tries so hard, Meghan just isn’t. As Scarlett O’Hara said about India. “If she thought anyone would take after her she’d walk down the street naked.”
