Trying to reassure allies and rivals, President Barack Obama billed himself Saturday as "Americas first Pacific president," promising the nations of Asia "a new era of engagement with the world based on mutual interests and mutual respect."
Turning tough, Obama also said that the U.S. "will not be cowed by threats" from North Korea, which he said for decades "has chosen a path of confrontation and provocation, including the pursuit of nuclear weapons."
In a slap at President George W. Bush, Obama spoke of the importance of "multilateral organizations [that] can advance the security and prosperity of this region."
"I know that the United States has been disengaged from these organizations in recent years. So let me be clear: those days have passed, Obama said during the first major address of a four-country Far East swing, which will continue from Japan to Singapore, China and South Korea. As an Asia Pacific nation, the United States expects to be involved in the discussions that shape the future of this region, and to participate fully in appropriate organizations as they are established and evolve," Obama said.

The question I always ask myself is if it's possible to despise this entity more than I do now. Whenever I think I've reached a limit, something else comes up to tell me that there is always room for growth.
I think he meant “America’s first PATHETIC President”
Thanks. That makes a lot more sense.
What on Earth is a Pacific President?
If it’s one that engages with nations in and around the Pacific Ocean - well, America has been heavily engaged with friends and allies around the Pacific for a long time.
As a citizen of one of those countries (Australia), a long term and close friend and ally of the United States, I have to say I find it rather insulting and offensive to read statements that to me suggest that good contact with Australia is less important to America than good contact with “Singapore, China and South Korea”.
What is it about the American left that seems to feel it’s all right to ignore long term allies to try and curry favour with other nations?
Nothing wrong with looking for new alliances and better relationships with more countries - but don’t dismiss the ones who’ve stood with you in the past.
Obama should remember that it was the Bush administration that “caught” the North Korean Nuke program....after Madeline was rendered harmless after drinking and dancing with Kimmy.
As usual the adults have been 10 steps ahead of you the entire time.

The folks at Politico need to find a real job.
Isn’t Kenya on the Indian Ocean? The list of “firsts” they’ll invent for this guy is unreal; they obviously know already he won’t be remembered fondly outside of housing projects and academia...
Mike Allen, and Politico itself, are shameless pumpers of the Obama way. Obama talks, talks, talks; Politico reports approvingly, but nothing gets done.
I think he meant Americas first PATHETIC President
Good one!
America’s first PATHOLOGICAL president.
America’s first PUTRID president.
Entity. That's a good word. And it's certainly more fit for polite company than the unladylike words I've been using lately...
He may be Pacific, but the question is...is he human? I think I'll go watch the latest episode of V again.
I think this reporter from the Politico should crack open a US history book once and awhile. I believe every President since McKinley has been heavily involved in Pacific affairs. For example, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon were involved in Pacific affairs, just ask John Kerry.
Why does he keep bringing up Bush? Its just childish.
First pacifist, appeasefist President!
Fist bump!
Got to kiss the hands that feed his DC spending machine
And the “p” words abound. Man, Onada has not been able to manage one constructive thing since usurping the WH. Everything, and I mean everything, he touches turns to crap.
Even his “First Pacific President” gambit has quickly generated an opportunity to heap more scorn on the man. And that picture of him bowing to the Jap premier is beyond disgusting. He looks like a school boy trying to placate a stern teacher.
Once again the Clown in Cheif demonstrates his total ignorance of even basic facts.
6 Party talks on North Korean Nukes. Afghanistan is a NATO mission. 38 nations sent troops to Iraq, Multi nation diplomcy on Iran's nukesetc etc etc
If anything Bush was too multilateral.
