Some days the Republican Party seems to be going crazy. Its public image is often shaped by people who appear to have gone into government because they saw it as a steppingstone to talk radio.
But deep in the bowels of the G.O.P., there are serious people having quiet conversations. The people holding these conversations created and admired Bob McDonnells perfectly executed Virginia gubernatorial campaign. And now as they look to the future of their party, and who might lead it in 2012, the name John Thune keeps popping up.
As you may or may not know, Thune is the junior senator from South Dakota, the man who beat Tom Daschle in an epic campaign five years ago. The first thing everybody knows about him is that he is tall (6 feet 4 inches), tanned (in a prairie, sun-chapped sort of way) and handsome (John McCain jokes that if he had Thunes face hed be president right now). If you wanted a Republican with the same general body type and athletic grace as Barack Obama, youd pick Thune.

Athletic grace? Have you seen the girly-man throw a baseball?
I hope David Brook’s endorsement doesn’t hurt Thune re-election chances. I sent Thune $25 in ‘04. I seem to recall that he voted against make John Boltion the UN Ambassador because he had a falling out with the Bush Administration on an issue.
McCain Redoux? Times trying to pick our next candidate for us...
The NY Times publishing some good about him might just end Thune’s career.
--now there is a statement that only someone with the intellect of David Brooks could make--
Is Brooks a Log Cabin Republican? He sure spends a lot of time embarrassingly gushing about other men
hmm...OK - I don’t know much about him, but just checked out some photos. He’s hot. :)
Really? That's not encouraging. I don't know anything about the man, never even heard him speak, but I read a piece on another site - can't remember which one - that said he had an ACU rating of 100%. I checked for myself, and it was 84 in 2008, and it's 86.77 lifetime (about the exact same as Roberts in Utah, which also isn't encouraging), for whatever it's worth.
David, stop talking! Anyone you describe as "promising" will be discarded from consideration as a gutless RINO. . .
If you wanted a Republican with the same general body type and athletic grace as Barack Obama
. . . and for a family publication, please keep the homoeroticism out of it, okay?
Boy, if Thune has aspirations, a favorable column from Brooks is far from the best thing that could happen to him.
And why is Brooks so fixated on the body and looks of other men.
I thought Obama was short, scrawny and clumsy.
Not in the same league as Jim DeMint, Tom Coburn or Jeff Sessions but maybe OK in the same way that John Kyl or Mike Crappo are OK. But now I wonder.
Thune is a Bush Republican.
Which is grossly insufficient for the task ahead.
I like Thune, but I’m wary of anyone who’s spent his whole life in and out of different civilian gubmint jobs.
And if David Brooks likes him, that’s a HUGE red flag.
That is QUEER!!
The NYT version of a conservative. Isn't it lovely?
It sure is. Could he be a RINO?
John Thune is South Dakota’s reparation for Tom Daschle and George McGovern.
