It was a feel-good hero story that for several days gave Americans some comfort after the murder of 13 soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas.
But like so many war stories including the infamous rescue of Private Jessica Lynch during the 2003 invasion of Iraq the exact details of how last Thursday's mass shooting at Fort Hood was brought to a violent end are growing more murky by the day.
Initially it was claimed that a slightly-built female police officer, Sergeant Kimberly "Mighty Mouse" Munley, opened fire on the suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, and kept shooting even after being hit three times.
But at least one witness now claims that Sergeant Munley, 35, was in fact hit by Major Hasan before she had time to get off a single round, and that it was her partner, Senior Sergeant Mark Todd, who actually felled the man now charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder. The witness, whose account was reported in The New York Times, declined to give his or her name.
Other official statements on the day of the shooting have also turned out to be wildly inaccurate, including a claim that Major Hasan had been killed.
"I would caution anyone from speculating about who did what until the investigation is complete," said Chris Grey, a spokesman for the U.S. Army's criminal investigation division, at a press conference at the military base last night.
Grey confirmed, however, that "both [police oficers] engaged the suspect" and that Major Hasan "did not have a scheduled appointment" at Fort Hood's Soldier Readiness Processing Center, where the shooting began.

Oh no, not this again. We went through this yesterday.
“Whose bullet hit him” isn’t the inspiration in this story. The fact that this little woman dared to stand up to the shooter is what counts.... in my book anyway.
Actually, what counts more is the disinformation value of the fake feminine heroine story to the Masters of Distortion. They wouldn’t want to report that the girl was shot and rescued by her male partner, would they? It wouldn’t surprise me a bit it the Masters of Distortion pulled off such a lie. You see, in order to maintain the delusions that bad is good, up is down, and woman is man, much energy must be expended on behalf of the delusions.
Thanks for the post!
It was my understanding that Munely shot and hit Hasan once.
Hasan returned fire and hit Munely twice, then Todd returned fire and dropped Hasan.
I’m sure it all happened in seconds that felt like hours
bump
Just after this happened, I read that they had both shot him; they had split up when they got into the building, she got to him first, fired at him and hit him, he fired back and she went down, then he began to reload and her partner came around and shot him (not fatally, unfortunately).
Why is it that you wnt to think she didn’t do anything? Heck, the male partner is black, and people yesterday were saying that the powers that be wanted to take credit away from her because she’s white.
That would be funny if it weren't true on so many levels. Feminism and political correctness repeatedly tell us that, "A woman can do anything a man can do." As proof they offer up the very small minority of women who can compete physically with average men.
Forensics will go some way in sorting some of this out, but really: Anyone who knowingly and willingly runs into a life-threatening situation to help others is a hero. Why can’t we leave it at that? Just that simple unembellished fact is awe-inspiring.
What we know is that she engaged him first, right?
And whether she got off any shot(s) or not is irrelevant as if she had not, and the Terrorist had not returned fire, it would not have given her partner the opportunity to bring him down, either directly or from subsequent hits
They are both to be commended, but as usual, the media are hell bent on getting to the bottom of this non-story, while completely ignoring any reference to Hasan's Terrorist ties.
Mountain out of molehill!!!
That's the problem with all these sleazy 9mm pistols so popular with security now. Where is the good old .357 MAGNUM! You won't shoot someone 3 or 4 times with that and have enough left to bury, much less a hospital case.
The truth should matter.
What is killing our faith in our entire system is there is no longer any reason to believe the official explanation of any act of mass murder.
TWA 800 was not downed in 1996 as officially described and anyone with a thorough knowledge of the eye witness testimony of hundreds of people who were there knows it.
It's like we prefer fairy tales to the truth and our lying leaders know it and enjoy playing to it.
It might be nice to know what ACTUALLY happened at Fort Hood (or at any other mass murder).
Exactly.
It does to the don't-empower-women-with-guns crowd. Can't have stories floating around about women being able to protect themselves or others with a weapon. Might give other women ideas...
I've been in a situation where I had to draw a weapon on someone and the biggest problem from a decision making perspective was that I had TOO much time to think about it. It was a tough thing to do; it was terrifying because I had the time required to consider consequences. I say this because she also had the time to rationalize it, and still dove in head-first. That takes some serious stones. When talking about who the hero is, it doesn't matter which one of them actually planted the lead... they were both hurling it and the job got done. She had plenty of time to think, turn tail and run, but she charged forward regardless.
To be completely honest, in a close range gunfight, I'd rather be thin and 110 pounds... a much smaller target.
My wife is right at 5ft, 110 pounds and she handles a .45acp just fine I can tell you.
Until it gets to the point of wrestling on the floor, I think she has the advantage (even though I'm still scared of my wife, I think she could actually kick my butt).
That being said, I guess we all want to see the underdog win when it comes right down to it. But certainly not at the cost of the truth.
You can’t improve the perfection in what is represented by the .45 1911. The round has no superior, and the gun was designed in a world war, tested in a slaughterhouse, it has yet to be bested. Progress would be to go retro.
I disagree. Pop culture claims "hero" on just about everyone, -diluting the meaning until the meaning is unrecognizable. A police officer is paid to react to these situations and most police officers go their entire career without ever having to fire their weapon. I respect firemen and cops because they are expected to combat violence and protect the public but that doesn't mean that they become heros when they do. They're doing the jobs we pay them to do. Just like soldiers, astronauts, firemen etc.
You go girl....take down those guys who have an issue with giving women their due.
