Two suspects have been arrested in the death of Paige DeJean, the 7-year-old girl killed by a stray bullet that ripped through the wall of her River Ridge apartment, authorities said today.
Andre Preston, 21, 428 Webster St., Kenner, and Roger Chairs, 21, 728 Filmore St., River Ridge, were booked overnight with first-degree murder, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said. Chairs was arrested at home, Preston at a Kenner motel.
They were identified as suspects from neighborhood tips and investigation by Sheriff's Office detectives.
"The death of Paige created pause in the community," Normand said. "I'm glad the community stepped up and cooperated."
Paige was shot in the neck Sunday just after 4 a.m. as she slept next to her 10-year-old cousin on an air mattress in her living room at the Mark Twain II apartments, 10950 Jefferson Highway. She was taken to Ochsner Medical Center in Old Jefferson where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators found bullet holes in two buildings at the apartment complexes and 9-millimeter bullet casings a few blocks away in the 200 and 300 block of South Upland Avenue.
The girl lived at the apartment with her mother, Alkima Anderson Williamson.
Her father, Staff Sgt. Henry DeJean, was on deployment in the Middle East with his Louisiana National Guard unit. He returned Monday on emergency leave.
He said he received word about the suspects and their arrest earlier today.

Saw it in the paper this morning and was very pleased. Newell and his men are to be congratulated. The people who pointed out the suspects are also to be commended for stepping up. Hopefully they’ll soon get the others involved in the gunfight.
What a sweetie she was!
Our warriors' families should all be living where they are safe.
That used to be ON-POST.....
What a sweet little girl.
“Stop Snitching” FAIL.
Yes they are to be congratulated. If this were to have happened a little farther east (New Orleans) the local P.D. would probably still be clueless.
The good news is that the “stop snitching” fades as soon as you leave New Orleans. The bad news is the “stop snitching” types have infiltrated the surrounding areas. Another after affect of Katrina.
Go with God, little one. Prayer to the family and friends during this terrible time.
Thank you so much for the ping, BBell.
I’m just in tears again after seeing the sweet smile of this little girl. It breaks my heart for her family, and loved ones, and for all of her little friends. They are in my prayers.
Thankfully, there were people in the neigborhood willing to help the police in the investigation, and those who are responsible for her death have been arrested. Now, if the punishment will only fit the crime!
That’s the one consolation in this horrific incident, she is safe for eternity, with God, where there is only joy, peace, and goodness.
