AN Australian Army bomb dog survived almost 14 months in the Afghan desert after being declared missing in action during a bloody battle with the Taliban.
Sabi, a bomb detection dog, was reported MIA after she fled from the same battle in which SAS Trooper Mark Donaldson won his Victoria Cross for risking his life to save an Afghan interpreter in September last year.
Nine soldiers, including Sabi's handler, were wounded in the ferocious firefight that ensured after the Australian, US and Afghan army convoy was ambushed by the enemy.
The black labrador fled from the chaos and was feared dead - until a US soldier found her roaming with an Afghan man in Oruzgan Province last week.
The soldier knew his Aussie colleagues were missing a dog, and realised when Sabi obeyed several commands that she was no ordinary dog.
Sabi was flown back to Tarin Kowt for an emotional reunion with her trainer, who said "it's just incredible to have her back".

Great story, if only that Pup could speak.

But seriously, I hope they compensated the Afghan man the dog was found with. He probably had a role in helping her survive. Plus he may have become attached to her.
I thought muslims didn’t like dogs. Or is that Hindu?
Muslims believe dogs are unclean. But one would rather have a dog for a friend than a stinkin muslim any day.
Unclean? Not possible. I couldn’t help hearing my dog lick himself under the table.
He must be the cleanest dog around.
A dog trainer told me the reason dogs lick themselves is because they know that at some point they will be licking thier owners face. Kind of a canine “Gotcha”.
No, that is when the dog climbs up on the bed in the morning after the wife gets up and lays down only to pass the most hideous, corrosive gas.
Nothing like having a mastiff wake you up so you gasp for any clean air in the room.
Good doggy...glad the Aussies got their fine dog back. ;o)
I’ve never believed O really has a dog. That was all for show and probably computer graphics. I don’t beleive a mussie would allow a dog in the white house. I have two dogs and won’t allow a mussie in my house.
