Lou Dobbs, the longtime CNN anchor whose anti-immigration views have made him a TV lightning rod, plans to announce Wednesday that he is leaving the network, two network employees said.
A CNN executive confirmed that Mr. Dobbs will announce his resignation plans on his 7 p.m. program. His resignation is effective immediately; tonights program will be his last on CNN. His contract was not set to expire until the end of 2011.
Well known for his political positions, Dobbs is an outlier at CNN, which has sought to position itself as a middle ground of sorts in the fractious cable news arena.
Mr. Dobbs met with Roger Ailes, the chairman of the Fox News Channel, in September. At the time Mr. Dobbs was viewed as a potential hire for the Fox Business Network. But a Fox spokesperson said Wednesday, We have not had any discussions with Lou Dobbs for Fox News or Fox Business.
Mr. Dobbs has been with CNN since its founding, save for a two-year stint at a Web site called Space.com. He has evolved over the years from a straight-laced business anchor to an outspoken commentator who rails against illegal immigration and taxpayer bailouts, among other subjects.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! (gasp gasp) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good for him. He will be an asset to any network.......hopefully FOX and hopefully is Smith’s slot.
I like Dobbs on illegal immigration and national sovereignty. He does tend to get into the blame business for low wages game pretty often, when I think sometimes government policy is more likely to be the culprit.
Just curious, what problem do you have with Major Garrett?
Dobbs would provide some needed ideological (non-leftist) diversity for Fox. Just about everybody is a blind cheerleader for world policing while Dobbs wants to bring the troops home. In fact, as far as I know, he is the ONLY major commentator on any network to take that position.
May I be the first to suggest that he replace Shep Smith!
Fox may hire him to be co-anchor on Geraldo
On planet New York Times CNN is probably the midlle ground.
Come to the Light Side of the Force Mr. Dobbs!
Well, to the NYT I guess CNN does appear on the “middle ground” if not rabidly conservative.
Anti ILLEGAL immigrant views. 2010 is the year!
Send Shep Smith to CNN, that IS where he belongs.
Will be interesting to see what happens to his ratings if he gets to FOX. I predict his raings will rise, and that the commie who replaces him on CNN gets worse ratings than Dobbs did on CNN. We win, commies lose.
They should put him on Fox at 5:00 and move Beck to 7:00. Get rid of Shep.
Who to dump from Fox? That’s easy....first to go Shepherd Smith. Although on second though I think O’Reilly. At
least with Smith we know who we’ve got and he doesn’t try to
appease both sides, like O’Reilly does.
I would guess that having a bullet shot at your home would provoke one to reweigh one’s priorities.
Smith hosts Fox’s only evening news show. Everyone else is a news commentator. Dobbs would duplicate Beck’s show.
I'd pay for it.
