Will Phillips isn't like other boys his age.
For one thing, he's smart. Scary smart. A student in the West Fork School District in Washington County, he skipped a grade this year, going directly from the third to the fifth. When his family goes for a drive, discussions are much more apt to be about Teddy Roosevelt and terraforming Mars than they are about Spongebob Squarepants and what's playing on Radio Disney.
It was during one of those drives that the discussion turned to the pledge of allegiance and what it means. Laura Phillips is Will's mother. Yes, my son is 10, she said. But he's probably more aware of the meaning of the pledge than a lot of adults. He's not just doing it rote recitation. We raised him to be aware of what's right, what's wrong, and what's fair.
Will's family has a number of gay friends. In recent years, Laura Phillips said, they've been trying to be a straight ally to the gay community, going to the pride parades and standing up for the rights of their gay and lesbian neighbors. They've been especially dismayed by the effort to take away the rights of homosexuals the right to marry, and the right to adopt. Given that, Will immediately saw a problem with the pledge of allegiance.
I've always tried to analyze things because I want to be lawyer, Will said. I really don't feel that there's currently liberty and justice for all.

his protest is over the rights of gays and lesbians, so he doesn’t stand during the pledge of allegiance
If he’s open to opposing points of views and their logical arguments, then more power to him. Can’t expect a kid to know it all, but a desire to want to learn as much as possible and strong convictions will get him far in life.
I don’t agree with his parent influenced stance, but hopefully he’ll recognize and support a solid opposing argument to his present stance.
he can’t be too smart....doesn’t understand anatomy....
Yea, I am not getting the connection either.
The poo flingers may try to recruit him.
Book smart / life stupid.
Dude this needs a gag alert!
NAMBLA would love to “have him” as a member.
Oh, and gays have every right to marry and adopt.
And these 'rights' are mentioned exactly where in the Constitution?
These people are very predictable. Find me an article about a kid who is "scary smart" who isn't being used to promote some stupid perversion. I can promise you that if he was standing up for virtue he wouldn't get the same write-up.

The kid can't be too smart or he'd realize that no one is taking rights away from anyone.
I hate seeing a kid being used the way this one is. He lives in an inverted world in which a kid gets positive reinforcement, he gets to feel very righteous, standing up for perversion.
Not standing for the flag? Wow. Real brave. These days there must be nitwits all over America who won't stand for the flag; I'm surprised there are any schools left where they say the pledge, to tell you the truth. Most places thats a thing of prehistory.
Oh, that said flag...
I teach 3rd grade in Texas and after our US and Texas pledges today our principal played God Bless America in honor of Veteran’s Day. Yes, I do teach at a public school.
Those evil right wing conservative kids.
There are no laws prohibiting a gay man from getting married to a gay woman.
2. His mother expects the teacher to apologise to him for asking him to stand during the Pledge.
They've been especially dismayed by the effort to take away the rights of homosexuals
...fell right off the cliff.
It was always enough to know that I didn’t HAVE to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance to make me want to stand.
So the kid can sit it out. Fine by me.
His idea that anyone is trying to “take away” rights from homosexuals is the result of parental propaganda. If he really is bright, he’s gonna be pissed when he gets old enough to realize he is being used as a tool.
