The high school I work for is starting a collection contest next week of items needed for our men and women serving overseas. Here is what I have heard about this event so far.
Each grade level will be collecting various items, which are assigned different point values, from a list. I have not seen this list as of yet but I did hear that the highest point values would be given to letters written to the troops.
At the end of the contest, collected items are to be sent to our soldiers and the class with the highest number of points gets to have a private lunch in the cafeteria that will include the sound system with their choice of music.
My thought is that since Freepers are so creative and in touch with our military heroes, that a list gathered here would definitely have those special items that I will be able to add for collection. I will update this thread as the week continues to track the collection progress.
God Bless you for doing this for us.
Footballs, frisbees, chapstick, coated gums, pens, phone cards, baby wipes, bug juice, foot powder, disposable cameras, magazines, crossword/game books, gatorade powder packs, nutrition bars, sunblock, eye covers, misc hygene items, sports team paraphanalia, and good coffee, is a good start.
No chocolate, it melts while on the hot tar-mac :)
Bulk pack of hanes grey tube socks.....
Pillow cases, pre-washed with the smell of home....
Gold bond talc powder....
Z87 rated safety glasses, clear for night and darkest possible for sun. Get companies like Granger to donate a case or your own workplace etc .....
Mechanics gloves, preferably black, OD or tan...
Toothbrushes, soft....
BIC disposable razors bulk packs.......
Sharpie twin tip permanent markers, black....
Baby wipes with lanolin or wet wipes with aloe.....
Notes and drawings from school kids.......
Just some of the things that made a difference when I was there......and I send to em now !
Gun cleaning kits...
Maybe that's why Goober peanut butter was one of the 'big' items I did hear mention of. Hell, with all the preservatives, NOTHING bothers that stuff!
Believe it or not..... tampax for them to carry for First Aid-—Pluggin’ up bullet wounds-—they are in sealed packets and sterile..... helps stop the bleeding ‘til medic gets on the seen. This time of year they also like night watch caps...can be single crocheted of knitted...dark colors. They fit under their helmets and keep them warmer as it is very cold in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Some time back I’d read that silly string is helpful in locating trip wires. Perhaps someone can verify whether that’s correct information and still current.
Sanitary napkins, hot cocoa powder, instant coffee and creamora powder, batteries, baby wipes, shampoo, soap, hair gel, blank recordable CDs and DVDs, movies on DVD, mosquito repellent, kleenex in the little carry pouches, small good quality flashlights and batteries.
Any brand type should work as long as they are wrapped and kept sterile. Also they use the maxi pads for compresses or put inside their helmets for sweat bands when it is hot and they cushion also. Hope this helps...my son had his men keep them available in their kits....that’s how I know about them. He requested that we send them to his men in Iraq.
Another thing that comes in handy for them are mouse traps....when it is cold the mice come inside where it is warm and chew up their stuff, electrical cords, into their food supply, etc.
This is great guys thanks for the info. I am supposed to speak with the person who has organized this later this morning and will be passing on the lists.
Another handy item was zip lock bags and those glad plastic “disposible” containers with lids. Magazines. Also goodies to hand out to the local children.
They use those extra long pipe cleaners to get the sand out of various parts of their weapons, too. You can get them at any craft store, and places like WalMart. Our local group has sent cases of those things.
