The hero cop who ended the bloody rampage at Fort Hood by pumping four bullets into the crazed gunman even though she was wounded is known for her toughness, friends say.
Before relocating to Texas, civilian police Sgt. Kimberly Munley spent about five years as a cop in North Carolina where she forged a reputation as a no-nonsense officer.
"I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm really not," said close friend Drew Peterson, 27.
"She was born and bred to be a police officer. If you were ever to be in a fight, she'd be the first person to stand up next to you and back you up. She's a tough cookie."
Munley's toughness and grace under pressure were on display Thursday when she and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire, said Army Lt. Gen. Bob Cone.
Munley, who had been trained in active-response tactics, rushed into the building and confronted the shooter as he was turning a corner, Cone said.
"It was an amazing and an aggressive performance by this police officer," Cone said.
Munley was only a few feet from Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan when she opened fire.
Wounded in the exchange of bullets, the 34-year-old Munley was reported in stable condition at a local hospital.
In a posting on her Twitter page before the shooting, she wrote: "I live a good life....a hard one, but I go to sleep peacefully @ night knowing that I may have made a difference in someone's life."
Munley's brother Daniel Barbour told ABC News that his sister had been shot three times in the hand and the leg.
One of the bullets pierced an artery, requiring her to undergo surgery Friday.
The diminutive Munley - she stands 5-foot-4 and weighs about 120 pounds - served as a cop in Wrightsville Beach, N.C., before she moved to Texas to enlist in the military, friends said.
She is married with two daughters and is no longer in the armed forces.
"She's the happiest, sweetest, most fun-loving girl you'd ever want to be friends with - and never want to cross," Peterson said.
The hero cop spent Thursday night phoning fellow officers to let them know she was fine and to find out about casualties in the attack - the deadliest ever on a military base in the U.S., Cone said.
Cone said Munley's aggressive response training taught her that "if you act aggressively to take out a shooter you will have less fatalities."
"She walked up and engaged him," he said. He praised her as "one of our most impressive young police officers."
Sgt. Kimberly Munley and Dierks Bentley
When country star Dierks Bentley met Sgt. Kimberly Munley last July as he played an Independence Day concert at Ft. Hood, the police officer stood out to him.
"She was on the police force and was off to the side but I could tell she was a fan," he told PEOPLE Friday. Munley waited quietly until the crowd thinned out and then approached Bentley for a picture, which she posted as her Twitter profile image.
Now, it's the singer who is proud to be pictured with Munley, hailed as a hero after stopping Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged the shooter responsible for Thursday's massacre at Ft. Hood Army base, which killed 13 people.
Bentley telephoned Munley, 34, on Friday morning after he learned that she helped fell the gunman and had been wounded in the process.
"I said I was honored to have my picture with her and that my band and I were all thinking of her and praying for the folks on the base. I told her, 'We are all just really thankful to you,' " says Bentley. "She was quiet and she's just humble person and said she was just doing what she does. She would say she's just out there doing her job, but it's a pretty amazing job she did. It's pretty impressive.
Bentley says Munley was in good spirits despite her injuries and the grave nature of the previous day's events. "I can't imagine what that experience was like but she said she's okay," he says. "She said she lost a lot of blood but it sounded like she's on the road to recovery."
Bentley, who plans to return to Ft. Hood to see Munley again, says those on the base are no doubt shaken by the shooting, but will draw on the strength of their close-knit military community.
"God, these families there is a reason why they call them Army strong. There's strong and then there's Army strong," he says. "They have to deal with their friends, husbands, sons, daughters putting themselves in harm's way far away and now to have that worry in their own community where they should feel they are the safest? But these are the strongest people. It's a really tight-knit group and they lift each other up when they are down."

'Tough woman' cop hailed Fort Hood hero
Excerpt:
The police officer who ended the Fort Hood massacre by shooting the suspect is known as the enforcer on her street, a "tough woman" who patrolled her neighborhood and once stopped burglars at her house.
"If you come in, I'm going to shoot," Kimberly Munley told the would-be intruders last year.
It was Munley who arrived quickly Thursday at the scene of the worst massacre at an Army base in U.S. history, where 13 people were killed. She confronted the alleged gunman, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, and shot him four times. Munley was wounded in the exchange.
That's just like her, friends and family say.
"I just felt more protected knowing she was on my street," neighbor Erin Houston said.
Munley, the mother of a 3-year-old girl, lives on a street where a lot of homes are vacant because so many residents are deployed at war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

What an amazingly brave and feisty little gal .. God bless her for her quick thinking and tremendous grit; prayers for complete healing. Fort Hood and millions of Americans will never forget her.
I’m surprised she hasn’t been charged yet.
I know what ya mean, but no way will
that fly .. not now.
Obviously the spin talking points have been issued to the MSN by Axelrod from the heady precincts of the White House.
We need to change the language. I laugh about all the descriptions of this incident.
Words are used like shootings , killings , ( couched in terms as if the victims could shoot back.)
This happened at a med facility where there was a long cue for flu shots and other medical processing. The perpetrator calmly got to his feet , reached into his jacket, drew his 5.7 mm FN pistol and calmly started walking down the rows of people , pointing his weapon and shooting them calmly, point blank, in cold blood.
This was not shootings This was not killings. This was genocidal execution. These human beings were dispatched as if they were animals. One woman was 6 months pregnant.
TIME TO TELL THE TRUTH. GENOCIDAL EXECUTION is what this was.
The same sort that happened in Kenya , courtesy of Obamas tinkering there, in 2007.
OBAMAS FAULT!!!!!!!
THIS WAS AN ACT OF RELIGIOUS GENOCIDE.
THIS WAS A WAR CRIME.
Munely is a hero. She JUST HAPPENED to be walking by as the shooting was happening, a gift from God, an avenging angel who saved a lot of lives.
The mother who brought down the Fort Hood killer

Kimberly Munley does not look as if she would be much of a match for a heavily armed US soldier on a murderous rampage. But the slightly built 34-year-old civilian officer was first on the scene after Major Nidal Malik Hasan began firing on comrades at Ford Hood in Texas as they prepared to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. The 39-year-old psychologist killed 13 and left 31 others with serious injuries.
On Thursday afternoon Ms Munley was doing her usual job of directing traffic on the sprawling base. By chance, she and her partner happened to walk past the Soldiers Readiness Processing Centre soon after Major Hasan armed with two handguns cornered his fellow soldiers. Soldiers who witnessed the rampage described the gunfire as continuous, methodical and well aimed.
Ms Munley succeeded in bringing him down by shooting him four times, even after being hit by a bullet that passed through both her legs, according to witnesses.
Her swift reaction and courage were being praised last night for preventing many more deaths.
It was an amazing and aggressive performance by this police officer, said Lieutenant-General Robert Cone, Fort Hoods commanding officer. The critical factor here was her quick response to the situation.

She is a great American Hero!

So true .. God bless her and continue to protect her.
She quickly and skillfully took down a deranged islamofascist terrorist who escaped proper and vital scrutiny by his military superiors.
That better change ... now.
She sure is ... talk about courage .. incredible gal.
And...as she would be the first to say....”just doing my job”.
such bravery had BETTER be rewarded!
If not by the fake president, then by the public!
She quickly and skillfully took down a deranged islamofascist terrorist >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Well you know its hard for Americans to understand that religious fervor is not derangement. He was not in fact deranged, which implies he was out of contol. This man Hasan was calm and methodical, he was conducting the religious ritual of a Mujihad, knowing that if he died, both he and his victims would join before Allah in heaven.
Thats hard for us to wrap our minds around, but he was not deranged at all.
Take a look:
Witnesses described Hasan, who was wearing an Army uniform during the assault, as steely calm. He paused only to reload one of his handguns.
(Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) )She said he targeted specific people as he stalked through a deployment center, two handguns blazing.* (Senator Hutchison took notes from people who were at the scene, knowing the facts would be spun.)
It was very deliberate in his approach, they said that he was calm, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, the base commander at Fort Hood, told Good Morning America today.
He was shooting people more than once if he could, said Cone.

Munley took down a stone, cold killer, who was fully in control of himself, a Mahujadine blazing with the inner spiritual fire of Allah, pure evil. That makes her deed all the more heroic.Allah and Jehovah in that sense had a shoot out, and Jehovah got the drop on Allah.Stopped him cold.
That makes her accomplishment all the more significant. And the Muzzies are trembling over it, as well they should.
God almighty did send an angel, and she was victorious.
God bless her and keep her.She is every American patriot. The nation is full of us.
Anyone want to take bets on how long before the leftists, especially the leftists in the media, decide to take her down? They can not have someone who shot a Muslim viewed as heroic.
You know, “She should have realized he was suffering from mental problems and stress and tried to talk him down. She did not need to use a gun. She should have tasered him or knocked the gun out of his hand with her night stick. Is it going to be open season on all mental-Americans by uniformed police now?” That kind of thing. Wait and see.

Beautifully said. I just repeated to my friend
tonight: the state of our world today is the
embodiment of good vs. evil, and the gates of
hell are open.
The derangement to which I’m referring is his
twisted thinking from the evil perversity of
his radical islamic belief.
Speaking of which .. why is there no mention
that he’s of the islamic sect which we’ve
repeatedly been told was the violent sect,
the Wahabbi sect, and that the others are
supposed to be so peaceful?
Reminds me of the shooting in that church in Colorado Springs where the gal ran towards the gunfire, passing a security guard on the way to take down the shooter.
God defeated Allah at Fort Hood.He also did not let Hasan die to gain a seat next to his perverted god.
Political Correctness is used to keep America blind to what actually goes on inside a Mujihads heart mind. The left has worked so hard at making sure that America does not see its war against Terror as a religious war, when in fact the enemy sees it as EXACTLY that. A religious war.
This is , as Bush said, a war against evil. And evil came to Fort Hood in the form of a jihadi who was in fact possessed by Allah. For me this incident has shades of the movie “Exorcist.”
And Good has triumphed, even though so many innocents died.
This truth of which we speak needs to me shared with America as much as possible.America needs to know of the evil which it faces, at long last. No matter what the left want to make of it.
The religious practice of the Mujihad needs to be explained to every one. There is an inner prayer designed to connect one with the self righteous energy of Allah, who literally takes over the body and mind of the jihadine.Thats what happened here.A kind of Muslim spiritual possession.Hasan was not insane, or deranged. He was just fired up on his prayers and energized. He was executing a religious ritual which he believed would open the gates of heaven for him.
The MSM will not properly inform the public about this religious practise of jihadism. It would no longer be a war on terror,The terrorists could no longer be redefined as “criminals” by Obama , who should be Mirandized with the benefits of due process that Bush had made sure to remove, as deserved.
Yup, it seems America has some very brave women, whose care for others surpasses the care they have for themselves.
First, I have to say she is AWESOME and an inspiration to all young people in this country, especially women.
Second, I have to say that a 5’4” woman is NOT “diminutive.” The average height of women in the U.S. is right at 5’4”. And 120 lbs is a very healthy weight for that height. She looks like she is all muscle in that photo. She only looks small because the man beside her is on the tall side.
(Oh, and a gun — and knowing how to use it — makes you just as tall as anyone else in the room!)
God help us in this diabolical conundrum and Catch 22

Muslim Population in the Military Raises Difficult Issues
*snip*
Muslim soldiers also face challenges stemming from their dual identities as adherents of the Islamic faith and as members of the U.S. military. In Iraq and Afghanistan, Muslims serving in the U.S. military often use fake last names to avoid being singled out by insurgents as traitors and to prevent reprisals against their families elsewhere in the world.
The Pentagon’s outreach to the Muslim community has expanded significantly in recent years. The first Muslim chaplain in the military, Army Lt. Col. Abdul-Rasheed Muhammad, wasn’t appointed until 1994. The military didn’t open its first permanent mosque, the Masjid al Da’Wah facility at Virginia’s Norfolk Navy Base, until late 1998.
Today, recruiting more Muslims is a top priority for many branches of the military. Under the Army’s “09 Lima” program, Muslims willing to enlist and serve in Iraq and Afghanistan as military translators and cultural advisers receive hefty signing bonuses and expedited paths to citizenship.
The Army recently established its first full unit of Muslim personnel recruited under the program, the 51st Translator Interpreter Company at California’s Fort Irwin. The unit has more than 120 soldiers who are native speakers of Arabic, Farsi, Pashto and Dari.
In interviews in recent years, more than a half-dozen Muslim soldiers serving in Iraq said they had initially felt uncomfortable about being sent to fight in an Islamic country. But all the soldiers said they were proud of their service, and several re-enlisted.
Army officials at the Pentagon said that Muslim soldiers who felt their religion prevented them from fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan could claim conscientious objector status and seek noncombat assignments in the U.S. But they weren’t aware of any Muslim soldiers who had done so.
