Texan police officer Kim Munley who shot Fort Hood gunman hailed as a heroine

A police officer who intervened to stop a shooting spree at America's biggest military base was hailed today a heroine as she received treatment for the wounds received in a shoot-out with the gunman.

Major Nidal Hasan, an army psychiatrist due to be posted to Afghanistan, shot dead 13 people and wounded 30 others after opening fire with two handguns at Fort Hood yesterday afternoon.

But the death toll from the rampage could have been far worse had it not been for the actions of Sergeant Kimberly Munley, a civilian police officer stationed at the base who was the first on the scene as Major Hasan picked off his victims.

Sergeant Munley managed to hit Major Hasan four times but was herself hit by a bullet that passed through both her legs, according to witnesses.

Colonel John Rossi, briefing reporters at Fort Hood this morning, said that Major Hasan's victims, who were killed in a part of the base used to process soldiers for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan, had all been unarmed. Sergeant Munley had been the first armed person on the scene and had immediately taken him on.

"Her efforts were superb," he said

Jerry Rivers was jumping up and down last night declaring that it was only ONE shooter, not multiple shooters.

It IS a very important difference. One shooter can be disassociated with his religion and terrorism based on that religion.

That’s why it was so important to Jerry to dismiss the “multiple shooter” theory.

And don’t forget, it was a woman, Michelle Bachman that was telling everyone to show up at the hill yesterday and don’t forget the fabulous Sarah Palin. No wonder terrorists are scared of us women, we rock!

She’s a hero in exactly the same way Capt. Sully is a hero. They have a job that is rife with opportunities for the stuff to hit the fan so they plan and train for those times. It might be months, or in Sully’s case, years before they ever have to use the training, or maybe never. The hardest situation in the world to keep your skills up and current. But when the chips were down they knew the plan, they used it and it did exactly what it was supposed to do. I love the fact they’re talking about the current thinking, there at least, is to confront the problem, not hunker down and wait for the SWAT team to get there.

Extended and high capacity mags are commonly available for most 9mm’s. I’ve seen 18 round mags for a Ruger P89mk2, a 9mm semi-auto.

Also, with a little practice, you can change out a mag in under a second.

When you are killing unarmed people around you with 15 rounds the unshot ones aren’t exactly standing within reach waiting for you take 1 to 2 seconds to pop in a new magazine so that they can leap on you.

Here, let me use the words snap and judgement in a sentence:

Several weeks after a judgement of "death by hanging" had been reached at his court martial, a snap was heard when the noose suddenly tightened around former Major Hasan's neck.

National Puerile Radio is beneath contempt.

Ok. 9mm then, I guess. Have they ID’d the caliber yet?

Was figuring 45. But then I guess it’d be more like 40 dead, 3 injured instead of 13-30.

The thing is, the people we are dealing with on *our* side are scary enough they may just do that and give this girl a hard time later on. Keep an eye on that.

However, my immediate question about Islamophobia is, why shouldn’t we be afraid of this version of Islam? Fear is a natural, healthy reaction to a threat condition. It invokes the fight/flight responses essential to survival. Last I checked, surviving is a good thing.

So the real question, in my mind, is not whether this type of reaction is based on fear (it is), but whether that fear is rational. An irrational fear is a phobia; a rational fear is just a good adaptation to circumstances. In my book, this fear is rational, therefore not a phobia.

BTW, can Hasan now be charged with a hate crime? Good test case. Heads we win, tails they lose.
