Catholic Bishops: Health Care Bill ... ‘Money-Laundering System’ for Funding Abortion
CNS News ^ | November 06, 2009 | Matt Cover

Posted on 11/06/2009 7:06:49 AM PST by Mrs. Don-o

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops dismissed the House Democrats’ plan to try to isolate funding for abortion in the health care bill as a “money-laundering system” that would do nothing to stop federal funding of abortion, an issue that could potentially derail health care reform.

The plan, known as the Ellsworth amendment after its author Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.), attempts to serve as a compromise between pro-life Democrats led by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich) and the party’s liberal, pro-abortion leadership. All of the health care bills currently before Congress allow for taxpayer funding of abortion....

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), which speaks for the approximately 300 active bishops in the United States, sent a memo to congressional staff on Thursday about the issue...

The bishops called this a “money-laundering system” because once premiums are paid into a public option, they become federal funds.

“While all funds in the public plan begin as private funds, in the pockets of taxpayers and purchasers, they all become federal funds once they are paid to the government (whether paid as taxes or as premiums) – and all abortions in the plan are paid for by the federal government,” the USCCB memo reads.

“So this money-laundering system, aside from making the operation of the public plan more unwieldy, does nothing to address pro-life concerns,” the bishops said.

It's hypocritical to call out the catholic vote for abortion when the bishops aid and abet illegal immigration.

Only a blind fool could miss this point.

Anybody hear anything from the pulpit/bulletin yet about the bishop’s directive to oppose this? Nothing from my church last weekend, but I think they print the bulletins mid-week, so perhaps it was too late to include. Still, I wish the priest would have said something. We’ll see what happens this weekend, but isn’t the first vote coming on Sunday?

I hope the bishops didn’t wait too long.

I’m not Catholic. I’m against illegal immigration. I’m against abortion, too.

End the welfare state and if people grow up, those two issues will be minimized. Or maybe we’ll have civil disorder from the dependent leeches if we end the welfare state.

With handy, usable contact information

Here are all the Blue Dog Democrats. The clickable links go to their online Message System. You can use this local district information --- City, State, Zip, and Area Codes-- to get through their spam filter. If they ask for a Zip+4, you can use any 4 digits added onto the indicated Zip Code.

The way I do it is, first copy this entire page of information into a different (Word) program. Then copy the line that has the city, zip, etc. for that particular district. The click the HTTP thingie to get into the Message System. Then paste the info. into one of the blanks, and point and drag the city, zip, etc. onto the correct lines.

Go get ‘em.

So many democrats from Georgia. Here’s hoping that a strong GOP turnout in 2010 will allow a thorough Gerrymandering of the state to consolidate the Left into as few seats as possible. Georgia should pick up a seat or two after the census and wouldn’t it be great to see ten or eleven GOP congressmen from there.

WOW!

This is a serious statement from the bishops, invoking “money-laundering” for abortions. I have to say I’m impressed...

One wonders if the general “Catholic” people in this country will care.

Sad, but true. Many Catholics are lukewarm in their fervor for their faith so the ardent Catholics need to pray double-time.

There are no “Blue Dog” Democrats.

The Democratic leadership allows some members to vote against the party line when the outcome of the vote is certain.

Your petitions calls, faxes and emails are futile.

They do what they are told. Otherwise they lose funding and risk a primary fight.

The Catholics who support abortion are not REAL Catholics, but CINOs. They have excommunicated themselves and cannot receive Communion! (And they know that too!)

We'd like to have everybody. But we only need "enough."

And if I maybe permitted to draw your attention to the obvious, there are many other religious denominations in the United States, and I have not seen one of them which has done one blessed thing even remotely resembling the Catholic Bishops' Action Alert, to step the Health Care Bill from Hell.

FYI, here's the religious breakdown of the 316 non-Catholic Christians in the House:

African Methodist Episcopal 4
Baptist 60
Christian 27
Christian Science 3
Church of Christ 3
Congregationalist 4
Disciples of Christ 2
Episcopal 38
Greek Orthodox 6
Lutheran 24
Methodist 53
Mormon 14
Presbyterian 43
Protestant 20
Seventh-day Adventist 2
Southern Baptist 3
Others (10), One each: Anglican, Assembly of God, Christian Reformed, Church of the Nazarene, Community of Christ, Evangelical, Moravian, Quaker, Reformed Church of America, Serbian Orthodox, United Church of Christ.

And what are they doing about it? Seriously, I’m all ears.
