Maine voters upheld ‘the truth of marriage’ in Question 1 vote, archbishop says

/div>

Archbishop Joseph Kurtz

.-
Responding to the successful passage of Maine’s Question 1, Archbishop of Louisville Joseph E. Kurtz has said that the people of Maine voted to “uphold the true nature of marriage as a union of one man and one woman.” Truth is inseparable from justice, he added, saying that society should strengthen marriage, not redefine and confuse it.

Question 1, an initiative which overturned the Maine legislature’s decision to recognize homosexual couples as married, passed on Tuesday by a margin of 52.9 to 47.1 percent.

Archbishop Kurtz, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage, commented on the vote in a Wednesday statement.

“The voice of the people in this country has spoken once again on the side of justice, in favor of the truth about marriage,” he remarked.

“Law should be at the service of truth and justice. Laws based on untruths are unjust. Working for justice presumes that we work to preserve the true meaning of marriage,” Archbishop Kurtz explained.

The archbishop also emphasized that the Church stands for the basic rights of all people, including homosexual persons, and decries “any unjust discrimination against persons who experience same-sex attraction.”

“Protecting marriage between a man and a woman has nothing to do with denying basic rights to anyone, though it is often framed in such terms,” he remarked.

“Especially in our society where we see so many marriages fail, we should work to strengthen marriage rather than redefine it,” Archbishop Kurtz continued. “Marriage must be protected and promoted today for what it is and what it is meant to be: the lifelong, exclusive union between husband and wife. There are many ways to uphold the basic human rights of all people, but sacrificing marriage can never be one of them.”

The archbishop stated that marriage as an institution precedes all others, political or religious, and deserves the state’s reinforcement and protection.

“The Catholic Church recognizes that this truth is contentious and difficult for some to accept. Yet it is a truth both accessible to human reason and confirmed by revelation, and the Church reasonably and compassionately urges all to respect it.

“The nature of marriage is written in the truth of who we are as human persons, as man and woman. One can say it is written not merely on our hearts, but in our very bodies.”

Archbishop Kurtz also said that sexual difference is “real and valuable,” not a social construct that may be disregarded “at will and without cost.”

“Sadly, the attempts to redefine marriage today ignore or reject the unique identity and gifts of man and woman. Such a dismissal only fosters confusion about what it means to be human.”

Speaking on behalf of the U.S. bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage, Archbishop Kurtz expressed his “deep gratitude” to Bishop of Portland Richard J. Malone and all organizations, individuals and voters who worked to support the “truth of marriage” in Maine.

He said the committee urges prayers that leaders and all the people of the country will promote and protect the “truth and beauty of marriage” and its place in service to human dignity and the common good.

Well, I’m glad the vote went the way it did, of course, but what kind of country do we live in when nearly HALF the voters in a state can’t figure out that marriage involves people of the opposite sex? PC madness has gone way, way, way beyond cute.

WOA.... I'M SHOCKED!...

A MEMBER OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ACTUALLY DEFENDING MARRIAGE... IN PUBLIC???????

I can tell you one thing...If these guys spoke like this everyday.... IN PUBLIC...LOUDLY... in CNN, NBC, NYT and the other pro-homo outlets, this issue would be put to rest. It would not hurt to see the Pope or Rome state their position throught the same outlets more often, say ONCE A MONTH?

Marriage is between a MAN and a WOMAN.

P.S. I also agree that no one should be persecuted for any reason, this includes homosexuals, as the priest says; BUT is it still a SIN?... Just wondering...

I will remove my tag when I see the RCC braking their SILENCE more often... MORE MORE OFTEN!... but this is GREAT and encouraging from them.

"A MEMBER OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ACTUALLY DEFENDING MARRIAGE... IN PUBLIC???????"

Where've you been?

The Pope said this today upon receiving in audience Delia Cardenas Christie, ... Specifically, he referred to the "defense of such primordial aspects as commitment to social justice...well as the safeguarding of the family based on marriage between a man and a woman."

Hello, I see Salvation's name at the top as well. I adore her.

I could say SO MUCH MUCH MUCH... but I won't. Just a couple of points:

1-The reason I picked the RCC is because I was born in it and therefore I can say that I know the RCC the way I could not say of other religions. Second, because of the size and tradition and presence of the RCC in the universe, it has a POWER that other churches do not have.

2-The day when I see the RCC represented on common TELEVISION channels defending our values (yes, that is where most people get their information from), then that will tell me that they are really PUSHING and FORCEFULLY trying to get their message out. But if you have to give me a link to a website to show me something the "Pope said," sorry, that will not do.

I would love to see this Archbishop of Louisville Joseph E. Kurtz on CNN, NBC, Larry King, NYT, etc all the lefty shows who actively promote the homosexual agenda, THEN I would say, yes, the RCC is fighting for our values.

Now, the important thing is that the RCC COULD if they wanted to, to be this visible, because they have the resources and presence to MAKE NEWS that the TV channels could not ignore, but I don't see that... And as long as I don't see their presence in this way on the general media channels, I will characterize their position as SILENT (mostly ignoring the issues, mostly looking the other way)

"Hello, I see Salvation's name at the top as well. I adore her."

I was hoping she would ping you some other articles about the Bishops and Pope etc...

"RCC in the universe, it has a POWER that other churches do not have."

You're right, and it understands the power of the media and the necessity of getting its message out there by means of it. There is one big problem though, the leftist media doesn't care much for the RCC, nor the general population at large, the media is about revenues, I doubt any time soon you'll see a constant view of Bishops on mainstream TV.

Regards.

PS: I'll try and keep a lookout for mainstream coverage of prelates.

Yes, Salvation has reached me before, that is how I know her... but not even her, as sweet as she is, can change my mind due to the points I just expressed.

True about revenues, but to increases there something that any media loves: Dissension... argument... fighting... setting one against the other... and boy, would not they love to have the RCC as one of the guests in their round tables, just to "spice it up" a little more and bring more viewers=revenue.

But the thing is, you can't expect the media to reach for the RCC... THEY, RCC and other Christian organizations have to get on their face... aggressively... loudly if you have to. I can think of SO MANY things how to do this... But nothing.... nothing on the news, where are the groups, protesting with their signs - as with abortion issues - NOTHING.... NO NOISE.... just SILENCE...

Did you hear about the tea party in WDC yesterday?... How and why do they do it?... Please don't tell me the RCC does not have the means to get their message out!... Please.. :)

see ya
