Fearing that a gunman who killed 11 people at a military facility in Texas may have been Muslim, US Islamic groups were bracing themselves for a public backlash against the faith today.
Soon after Pentagon officials named one of the shooters at the Fort Hood facility as Nidal Malik Hasan, Islamic groups rallied to condemn an act President Obama had earlier described as a "horrific outburst of violence".
"The guy's name is a Muslim name," Ibrahim Hooper of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) told AFP, expressing fears about damage to inter-faith relations, already strained by the September 11 attacks, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In a statement, CAIR condemned the shootings as a "cowardly attack" adding that "no political or religious ideology could ever justify or excuse such wanton and indiscriminate violence.***
Qaseem Ali Uqdah, who was a Marine for 21-years before becoming the Executive Director at American Muslim Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Council, now fears a "witch-hunt" like that which followed September 11, 2001.
"This is a criminal act and we have to treat it like a criminal act, not something to do with religion" he told AFP.
For the estimated 3500 Muslims in the US armed forces, Uqdah said there could be some fallout from the attack.
"What we don't need is people downrange sitting in foxholes (in Afghanistan or Iraq) questioning if you are a Christian, if you are a Muslim or if you are a Jew... that is not what we need as a nation.
"We need to fight the war on terror together," he added.
In a Pew survey published last September, 38 per cent of respondents said that Islam encouraged violence more than other religions.
Fifty-eight per cent said there was a lot of discrimination against Muslims in the United States.

Better safe than sorry.
When our people who helped liberate millions from Saddam--who even those against the war agree was a tyrant--were hung from bridges to dancing and applause, we didn't turn on the Muslims in our midst.
I just wish some of these folks would stand up and say they are part of US instead of always worrying about their little unit with the USA...something no one who considers himself an American ever worries about. We didn't think 9/11 was only about New York.
If these folks ever want to wonder why they even have these unfounded fears, they might want to think about the way Americans treat non-Americans in our midst, as compared to how folks from back home treat outsiders.
What "witch hunt," exactly?
And yes, Muslim terrorism does have something to do with religion. Not all Muslims are terrorists, but some are, and a large minority percentage actually support terrorism in support of their religion.
When a Southern Baptist, or a Mormon, or a Catholic, or a Jew, or a Mennonite commits murder, do those groups immediately talk of fearing reprisals? Why not?
“..US Islamic groups were bracing themselves for a public backlash against the faith today.”
These idiots who say they welcome the chance to be martyrs don’t need to worry. Each one of them already has reservations at Satan’s Holiday Inn on the Burning Lake. Hey guys, take aloe lotion with you when you blow yourselves up.
Muslims kill people and the rest of us are required to be worried about anti-Muslim backlash. This is maddening.
You can’t really blame soldiers for suspecting other Muslim soldiers. This incident, as well as the one in Iraq where the Muslim soldier tossed a hand grenade into his fellow soldier’s tent, only proves that some people cannot be trusted - EVER!
It might be a good idea to take those few thousand Muslims in the US service out and do an intense screening process including their origins, mosques attended, reading materials and posting contents. The ACLU and our current CIC won’t let that happen, I know, but how is this going to affect moral? How can anybody in the military feel safe even in their own country? My God, they sacrifice so much for their country and now they can’t be sure a fellow soldier AT HOME isn’t going to shoot them?
Something has to be done and it sure as hell isn’t a good time for that “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy change!
I can think of many ways to ease their grief. The best one might be to tell their constituents to stop going nuts and drop their death wish.
There might, however, be a chorus of accusations from the Dems and media elites and the likes of CAIR that there is a backlash, but more folks than ever have learned better than to believe them.
That said, if a soldier makes comments that (if I understand news reports correctly) align his or her sympathies more with an enemy than with us, then we should be free to find this person unfit to serve (without fears about labels of "profiling").
.
Nope, just the ones who are stupid enough to wish our troops or our citizens harm.
They defend the behavior, they refuse to condemn in PUBLIC the Islamic terrorist thugs... they NEVER condemn the Jihad calls from the Islamic leaders...
I've got news for the muzzies... ask the japanese what happens when we get p#ssed off. Not just the nukes. Ask them what we did in THIS COUNTRY to them.
This limp d#ck, PC protected Islamic p#ssy was KNOWN to have harbored Islamic sympathetic opinions and STILL was in the military.
The Marine Corps and the Army have been MADE to toe the PC line with security risk that muzzies present all in the good name of kneeling to the Political and Liberal masters in the Pentagon and Dept of Justice.
know your enemy and destroy it before it destroys you. How many time has this happened now.. mass murders, terrorists acts and who is doing this... Islamic backgrounds or socialist/communist background.
But don't worry, all the movies will have CHRISTIAN conservatives as the bad men.... All the new investigations will be of White hate crimes by our Dept of Justice.. especially under the TOFUS who resides in the White House now.
Oh, that's right Barak Hussein Obama is a Christian name... or is that Irish Catholic.. or maybe Amish.. that's right it's Amish.
Hmmm, hhmmmm , mmmmm...
I missed the Muslim demonstrations against beheadings and hanging Americans from bridges.
What is that stoning to death of raped women that the Sharia law endorses?
Someone needs to get over hear and educate us about how peaceful the Muslim faith is. Because all I get is that propaganda piped to us from Muslims in the MSM about how me and my family are infidels. Otherwise, “Muslim leaders” come out of the wood work to decry atrocities such as this and announce their concern for a backlash.
It’s unfair that 99% of the adherents to the “religion of peace” are allowed to give the other 1% a bad name.
They should tell their fellow Muslims to stop the killing. If they would do that, they wouldn’t have to fear a backlash.
Nothing a few ALCM’s delivered to Mecca couldn’t solve.
Then we could call it evens.
RE: Post #22
Very salient points and my thoughts exactly. I am so sick and tired of Americans being labeled bigots. This is the most diverse and culturally sensitive place on the planet.
How long would I last as a white American male in Syria, Egypt, etc.?
I would actually like to see some folks get a little riled up now and then. It might inspire some leadership of the Muslim faith to start demonstrating some patriotism and solidarity among “fellow” Americans here in the US.
>There wasn’t a “public backlash” against Muslims after 9/11 (except for that unfortunate Sikh murdered by a knuckledragging moron). Doubt there will be a “public backlash” tomorrow.<
Damn right there was no backlash.
A guy with the middle name Hussein was elected President.
The masses have Stockholm Syndrome.
Next thing they’ll say, “Hey, let’s have shariah law! That’d be cool!”
"We need to fight the war on terror together," he added.
