Armed Services panel wants 'detailed accounting' of Fort Hood tragedy

The Senate Armed Services Committee is seeking a "detailed accounting" of a Thursday shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, that left 12 soldiers dead and 31 wounded.

"Our hearts go out to the families of the brave Americans who lost their lives in today’s senseless violence at Fort Hood, Texas, and to those who were injured," said Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), the chairman of the defense policy panel. "For all Americans, and especially for those of us who know and work closely with members of our military, this is the saddest of days."

President Barack Obama called the attack "horrific" and promised answers to every single question on Thursday's shooting.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on Thursday pledged that the Department of Defense "will do everything in its power to help the Fort Hood community get through these difficult times."

Army Secretary John McHugh said that the Army is focused on "taking care of our soldiers and their families."

"The leadership at Fort Hood is marshalling the medical support and counselors necessary to take care of our soldiers and their families and to notify the next of kin," McHugh said in a statement.

Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist born in Virginia, was identified as one of the assailants in the mass shooting at a deployment readiness center on Fort Hood. Hasan was killed by military police and two other soldiers were also reportedly taken into custody as suspects in the shooting.

Thursday evening messages of condolence started pouring in from lawmakers from across the country. Rep. John Carter (R-Texas), who represents Fort Hood, asked for a moment of silence in the House, while Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) requested that the Senate halt its business in memory of the slain soldiers.

"We would like to express our condolences to the soldiers, families, and civilians of the Fort Hood community. Our nation asks much of the men and women of our military, as well as their families, and we never expect such senseless violence to materialize at their homes," Reps. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) and Bud McKeon (R-Calif.), the chairman and ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee said in a joint statement. "This was a terrible tragedy, and we will do everything we can to support the Fort Hood family."

Rep. Michael McMahon (D-N.Y.) called for better mental healthcare for military personnel in the aftermath of the shooting. "It's no longer just about combat -- we have soldiers attacking soldiers," he said in a statement. "While we do not know yet what the soldier's motives for this heinous act were, tragic events such of these have been occurring far too often lately. The statistics prove that incidents of suicide and violence among service men and women have been growing exponentially."

Just another unexplainable case of SJS.

Sudden Jihad Syndrome.

So, it’s not terrorism.

Wrong, in this case some general officers heads should roll, this bastard should have been out of the military, not promoted.

The command structure needs a house cleaning.

The Army is going to need to hire another "mental healthcare" guy. This one went nuts.

This guy was harassed. He was harassed beyond all enduring. The strain of the harassment, and the travails of deployment to a useless war.....triggered this. We are at fault.

We must make stringent new rules and punishments to prevent said religious harassment. Those who harassed this poor man must also be rooted out.

i, for one, am glad that the us senate wants a detailed investigation. if not for them, i’m sure the various commanders and military police at fort hood would investigate the crime, arrest the perpetrators, and have them tried for murder.

but now, the senate can blame it on george bush. oh happy day.

Figures a democrat would say this. Hey pal, we don't have soldiers attacking soldiers. We have muslim soldiers attacking soldiers. Let's get it right.

I’d like to know why this mooselimb was promoted to major. He had a bad eval at Walter Reed and was mouthing off against the war.

Hannity just did an interview with a colleage of the shooter. It turns out, allegedly, that the shooter said things that were reported to command and command did nothing about it. I can tell you that this is VERY common in the military.

Despite the Army being "tough" on suicide prevention, I caught a soldier with a loaded weapon to his head and reported him immediately after taking his weapon. I took him to the TOC to the First Sergeant and the First Sergeant had a ten minute chat with him and gave him his weapon back with ammo. I did what nobody is supposed to do: I jumped the First Sergeant's head and I went to where the chaplain was sleeping (we were in Iraq) and reported the incident. The Chaplain took immediate action and took the soldier's bolt and ammo. Sadly, this is just one of many instances where the Chain of Command, and sadly - mostly in the NCO corps, drops the ball when warned.

Perhaps they should start by asking why any muslim, natural or foreign born is allowed in the armed-services.
islam is a cult, bent on destruction of those who do not submit to its will. It’s past time to be politically incorrect.

Ah, I do hope you just forgot the /s tag.

This major had never deployed. Ever. Anywhere. He went to college on the Army’s dime, then Med school.

I suspect the “harassment” was in return for him running his mouth overtime and likely playing the drama queen as a Muzzie.

So, yes, the Major had PTSD
Pre Trama Stress Syndrom

Be interesting to see if the GCM gives him the death penalty or not.

Since he is a “minority” and a Muzzie, I would be surprised if he danced the Danny Deever.

(For those in Rio Linda, you’ll just have to read the Kipling all by yourselves)

According to this article from the SeattlePi.com, there are 15,000 muslims in the military. Assuming that they all just go gun crazy and shoot 13 people, the cost of political correctness will be 195,000 soldiers. That's assuming of course that none of them turn our artillary on our cities.

Qaseem Uqdah, a former Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who heads the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Council in Washington, D.C., counts upwards of 15,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and Coast Guard members.

Agree. There is no right to serve in our Armed Forces. Since Islam is hostile to our traditions and Constitution, no muzzies should be accepted.

However, there is little chance of that happening. The 1st Amendment, which has been abused to eradicate Christianity will in the end be the means of our national suicide. If the rats don't do it first, Islam will bring down the US from within.
