Army says 12 dead, 31 injured at Fort Hood (Arabic name, multiple shooters)

At least 12 people were killed and 31 others were wounded in a mass shooting incident Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas, military officials said. The shooter was shot to death, they said.

More shots were reported later in the afternoon, reported NBC affiliate KCEN-TV of Waco, which said no further details were immediately available.

A senior administration official told NBC News analyst Roger Cressey that the suspect who was in custody was an Army major with an Arabic-sounding name.

Milly Land, who works at the base fitness center, said she was headed for the graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. at the Howze Theater when the campus was locked down. She went back to the fitness center. She said she spoke by phone with friends at the soldier processing center, who said a gunman walked in about 1:30, walked to the medical area of the processing center, and started shooting. A second gunman was shooting at the theater next door, she said.

nowhere in that article does it say anything about a soldier with an arabic name.. if they said it earlier they are quickly retracting it

I agree...facebook has a Malik Hassan who is a black Muslim. Probably a political act of terrorism, especially since he did not go after his bosses....just new recruits.

I can tell you that the last time we were at the base to renew our ID cards the base was open for anyone that wanted to go on..All they had to do is show a drivers license..At the time I could not believe it I even questioned a woman that worked at the PX and said who is letting these people on this base..She said it was the new General,the name I can’t remember and don’t know if he is still there or not..We are retired military and do have a sticker on our car and can get through the gate.. ..Fort Hood is such a big place and would be hard to find anyone on that post..we usually come through the back gate since it is a faster way for us to go from where we live..that is the way that all the military do training..It would be very easy for anyone to get through there because there are few cars on the roads unless they are training in the field..Maybe now the people in charge will close the base to anyone that does not have an ID card..
