Kiel Native Killed in Fort Hood Shootings

A 1998 graduate of Kiel High School is among the 13 people killed Thursday when 39-year-old Major Nidal Hasan opened fire on his fellow soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, getting ready to deploy overseas. Thirty people were wounded.

Staff Sergeant Amy Krueger was killed at Fort Hood.

The first thing the mayor of Kiel did Friday morning when he heard the news about 29-year-old Amy Krueger was to order all the flags in the city lowered to half-staff.

The mayor, who’s too close to the Krueger family to speak on-camera, told us he feels overwhelmed and he still can’t believe Amy Krueger was killed.

“She enjoyed being in the military and was proud of it,” family friend Paul Schweitzer said.

We’re told at 29 years old, Amy was wise behind her years. Joining the military was something she considered, but it wasn’t until after the September 11 terrorist attacks that she enlisted.

A mental health specialist, she helped other soldiers deal with combat stress.

She had arrived at Fort Hood just this past Tuesday and was killed while preparing for her second deployment to Afghanistan.

“She was actually kind of excited. She said, ‘I’m a little worried but I’m excited at the same time.’ She said she didn’t know exactly how she felt but she was excited about it,” Schweitzer said.

Friends and the Kiel High School principal tell us Amy just loved life.

“Amy was just a very good kid,” principal Dario Talerico recalled. “She was always happy, had a lot of friends, and had some friends she stayed close with.”

Those friends were gathering Friday afternoon at Amy Krueger’s mother’s house, relying on one another to get through a difficult time.

SNIPPET: “Police Sgt. Kimberly Munley is credited with ending the Fort Hood mass shooting before even more people were shot.

The hero cop who ended the bloody rampage at Fort Hood by pumping four bullets into the crazed gunman even though she was wounded is known for her toughness, friends say.

Before relocating to Texas, civilian police Sgt. Kimberly Munley spent about five years as a cop in North Carolina where she forged a reputation as a no-nonsense officer.

“I’d like to say I’m surprised, but I’m really not,” said close friend Drew Peterson, 27.

“She was born and bred to be a police officer. If you were ever to be in a fight, she’d be the first person to stand up next to you and back you up. She’s a tough cookie.”

Munley’s toughness and grace under pressure were on display Thursday when she and her partner responded within three minutes of reported gunfire, said Army Lt. Gen. Bob Cone.

Munley, who had been trained in active-response tactics, rushed into the building and confronted the shooter as he was turning a corner, Cone said.

“It was an amazing and an aggressive performance by this police officer,” Cone said.

Munley was only a few feet from Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan when she opened fire.

Wounded in the exchange of bullets, the 34-year-old Munley was reported in stable condition at a local hospital.”

Fort Worth soldier was hero in Fort Hood rampage

Pfc. Marquest Smith, a former Fort Worth resident who joined the Army just over a year ago, was in a small cubicle inside the Soldier Readiness Center when he heard popping sounds. A bullet tore through the cubicle wall and lodged in the heel of his boot.

Within 15 minutes, the 21-year-old soldier was rushing through the chaos in the huge processing center to pull four wounded victims to safety and help take them to the hospital. The gunman fired toward him from across the room as Smith was fleeing the building.

Other tales of heroism spread throughout this grief-stricken base Friday as it struggled with the aftermath of the worst attack ever at a U.S. military installation. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George W. Casey, who arrived at Fort Hood with new Army Secretary John McHugh, called it “a kick in the gut.”***

Eight of the wounded were treated and released, and of the 30 originally hospitalized, 23 — including the alleged gunman — remained in hospitals late Friday. Thirteen flag-draped coffins were placed aboard a C-17 and flown to a military installation in Dover, Del., for final funeral preparations.

McHugh, who succeeded Pete Geren of Fort Worth as army secretary Sept. 21, told reporters that the FBI and Defense Department are conducting a joint investigation into Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who was felled in an exchange of gunfire with a civilian policewoman.***

Hasan, who sustained at least four gunshot wounds, was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio at mid-afternoon, the Army said Friday night.***

Col. John Rossi, at mid-evening Friday, said Hasan apparently fired more than 100 rounds of ammunition from his two handguns, a 5.7 mm semiautomatic and an older model Smith & Wesson .357-caliber revolver.
