Stunned and angry, national gay rights leaders Wednesday blamed scare-mongering ads and President Barack Obama's lack of engagement for a bitter election setback in Maine that could alter the dynamics for both sides in the gay-marriage debate.

They shop the courts until they can get the judicial decisions they need to overturn laws. There isn’t the support in legislatures and among voters.
And there will be resentment as the social order is challenged by judicial decree and not public support.
It’s a fairly universal concept and thousands of years old.
