Weve written about CNNs ratings drop in October, specifically in prime time.
Using another metric, it was made even more clear in the final week of October, CNN did not crack the top 30 cable networks in prime time.
For the first time in more than two years, CNN fell out of the top 30 cable channels last week in prime time (total viewers). Fox News ranked 3rd, behind USA and ESPN, while MSNBC was 26th. It was the 43rd consecutive week Fox News finished in the top 5 cable channels in prime time.
In total day, FNC was #5, CNN #27 and MSNBC #31.
CNN has pressed that prime time is just one of many metrics the network uses to measure audience data. And thats true. But seeing the network dip out of the top 30 for the first time in years is a telling sign something isnt working in prime time and its something that will have to be corrected to pull the network back into the top of the cable news, and general cable, ranks.
Well see what happens with last nights ratings CNN aired a largely election-focused prime time, even more so than FNC and MSNBC during the 8pmET hour. Will it translate to better ratings? Well find out in a few hours

what is a CNN?
thanks, I eventually found the link. Basically, everyone’s pounding CNN.
CNN CLOSES Out October
Off The List Of Top 30 Cable Channels
Ever notice how CNN hasn't had any "technical problems" since Raila Odinga's cousin took office?
Hey CNN! What goes around, COMES AROUND.
Your Karma has finally caught up with you, and I hope you enjoy eating it.
The Cartoon Channel is beating CNN?
Wow!
What is this “CNN” you speak of?!
;o)
>> MSNBC heavily promoted late election coverage for last night and went to tape immiedately after prime time <<
Poor ole Chris must have fallen off the wagon again.
ESPN18: Replays of the 1979 Argentinean High School Bowling semifinals.
Probably have a better demographic, too.
I guess the RFD Channel beat them out?...............
I have Dish Network. Lately, after the latest software download, every time I turn on my receiver, CNN comes on as a default channel. It used to stay on the channel I had on when I shut it off, but now it always comes on with CNN.
This is not only annoying, but I believe that they have cut some sort of scheme with Dish to help get their ratings up. Dish used to only offer CNN on their regular standard package. If you wanted FOX, you had to buy their highest priced package, of which I certainly gladly paid for just to get rid of the Commie News Network.
I will have to check into this further, unless there are some Freepers here who know what is up with this......
CNN should rename themselves after their flagship demographic to the Departure Gate Network.
After last night’s election coverage and commentary I doubt there will be thirty views in total on any given night.
FWIW, FNC comes “free” with any Directv package.
DirecTV stays where I put it, too.
I have DirecTV and it always stays on the channel I had turned it off from - I’ve checked settings and do not see any place where one could set a “default” channel either.
The only way this could happen, thinking about it, is if you mistakenly hit the record button or have set CNN to record for some reason. Check in your Lists to see if that is the case.
If you’re not recording CNN I’d give DirecTV a call to see if they may have any suggestions.
Thats the cable show where Anderson Cooper called American patriots “Tea Baggers”.
You remember now?
CNN is also getting beat by the Watching Grass Grow Channel (WGGC), Paint Drying TV (PDTV) and See Metal Rust Network. (SMRN)
I was switching between O’rielly and Campbell Brown’s show last night just to see them try to spin the results.
It was actually fun to watch CNN. I feel sorry for Mary Matlin. James Carville was so despondant, it was fun to watch.
