In a stinging setback for the national gay-rights movement, Maine voters narrowly decided to repeal the states new law allowing same-sex marriage.
With 87 percent of precincts reporting early this morning, 53 percent of voters had approved the repeal, ending an expensive and emotional fight that was closely watched around the country as a referendum on the national gay-marriage movement. Polls had suggested a much closer race.
With the repeal, Maine became the 31st state to reject same-sex marriage at the ballot box. Five other states - Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire and Vermont - have legalized same-sex marriage, but only through court rulings and legislative action.

Very proud of Maine for taking a stand for morals.
Funny, I don't think they used the word "narrowly" to describe Obama's win last November when he got 53% of the vote, the same amount that this repeal received.
You’re starting a pool as to whether court action will be brought and the will of the people will be overturned?
“Key Paragraph:
With the repeal, Maine became the 31st state to reject same-sex marriage at the ballot box. Five other states - Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire and Vermont - have legalized same-sex marriage, but only through court rulings and legislative action.”
...absolutely right....that’s why the queer marriage movement puts up such a fuss to prevent the public from voting on this issue...when the public votes, they always come down on the side of traditional one-man-one-woman marriage.
How was this narrow? 53% was declared “landslide” in Nov 08 when Obama won...proud to be a Mainiac today
I wonder if the ferocity with which gay marriage proponents attack their detractors was also a factor. People who stand up for traditional marriage are demonized and threatened in all sorts of manner by gay marriage proponents. I would imagine that sort of thing really turns a lot of people off to a cause, even if they are on the fence about it.
“...proud to be a Mainiac today”
....and we’re proud of you.
Proposition 8
Main article: California Proposition 8 (2008)
Proposition 8 is an initiative constitutional amendment that, if passed, would eliminate the right of same sex couples to marry.
Proposition 8[3]
Yes or no Votes Percentage
Yes 7,001,084 52.24%
No 6,401,482 47.76%
Valid votes 13,402,566 97.52%
Invalid or blank votes 340,611 2.48%
Total votes 13,743,177 100.00%
Voter turnout 79.42%
This “narrowly” is just another example of how “journalists” slip their opinions and editorials into the news. Just give us the facts. If it’s 53%, then tell us 53%. We’ll decide whether it was narrow or wide.
Will we see a repeat of the harassment of donors like we saw after Prop 8 went down in California? The pro-gay-marriage activists got ahold of the donation records and were going after people for months afterwards. Probably still are...
That was my point. If they lose, they bring court action to overturn the will of the people.
(is it something in their water or mine/ours?)
What a great night it was!
Ah the Slimes' favorite weasel word.
Did they also describe a 53% popular vote win as narrow for Obama?
Oops you beat me to it. But I agree.
Narrowly nothing, you've described the majority of news reportage. (most would not be tolerated by a 6th grade teacher)
You don’t get to decide what to think. Now get rid of all your incandescent light bulbs.
Recollections of the night when John Kerry's long face got longer!
Speaking of “gay” marriage, the lame duck Corzine and his lame duck legislature have sent out signals that they are for full legalization in New Jersey. Should be an interesting two month lame duck session. He and his minions are going to rob the state blind.
Rachel Maddow is sad today. Did you notice they did not cover elections on MSNBC last night. HIlarious.
