Newt Gingrich, who had previously endorsed moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava in the NY-23 special election, now says he is "deeply upset" about her endorsement of Democrat Bill Owens after she withdrew from the race.
"How could she have accepted all that support?" said Gingrich, also adding: "I'm very, very let down because she told everybody she was a Republican, and she said she was a loyal Republican."
Gingrich had caught a lot of criticism on the right for supporting Scozzafava, and arguing that the Republican Party needs to have room for moderates. Now that Scozzafava has quit the race and endorsed the Democrat, due to campaign by the right to push her out in favor of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, Gingrich will certainly have to work hard to undo the damage from his having bet on the wrong horse.
Let me guess, this was another “unexpected” outcome.
Republican Betting Window
He's part of the problem.
Newt the smartest man in the world got conned by a upstate NY rat? lol, time to retire Newt, how’s that man made global warming thing working out for ya? NY23 was Newt’s Rubican and he crossed it. Later Newt.
Loooo-seeeheerrr!
I like that description.
FLAMING LIBERAL RINO!
And proves that he left the House at the right time. Newt’s 15 minutes of fame was over 10 years ago.
Hey Newt, are you just now finding out that Liberals are Liars? Don’t worry, Pelosi is saving you a seat on her green couch for another commercial together.
My arm chair psychology, worth about two cents:
Newt is brilliant but demonstrably naive, only believes in the best in others — which is why people like Clinton and other con artists regretably and routinely make a fool of him.
More broadly, Newt, like Richard Nixon, has an insatiable pyschological hunger to be respected by the Beltway Establishment and invited into their salons - like George Will. Newt needs to get real with the fact that the DC Elite will always hate him and will never accept him.
Now he knows how we feel!!!!
The two party system is one of the things that has made America more politically stable than, say, European countries, with multiple parties forming shifting alliances.
And a third party coming from the Right usually means disaster. Think Perot.
Newt had nothing to do with naming Scozzafava as the Republican nominee. Once she was selected, he had a tough choice: Support someone who disagrees with him on every important issue, or weaken the party and possibly give up a Republican vote on, if nothing else, procedural issues.
That is not an easy decision, and I can’t really fault him for making what now appears to have been an incorrect choice. But, hindsight is 20/20.
I think our best chance to take back our country is a revitalized Republican party, pushed to the Right by incidents such as the one we are now witnessing. If Hoffman wins, that should certainly resonate with party leadership.
It will certainly resonate with loyal Republicans whose hearts are conservative, but who think the party needs to move Left in order to win.
Or, to put it another way, NY23 was Newtie's Rubicon, and he got crossed.
(Doublecrossed, that is)
Scozzafava got about a call a minute from Democrats, including Emanuel and Chuck Schumer. What did the Republicans do? Anyway, Scozzafava has proven that she’s up for sale, and her endorsement isn’t worth anything, anyway. So who cares who she endorses?
I think Newt just has gotten caught up in the media spotlight and has gone off the reservation. Some teachers tend to have this innate selfish attitude of entitlement and weird secular piety. It causes them to lose all sense of wisdom.
Newt you can’t be serious!! If I were you and I pulled such a gaffe I’d just shut up and pray that people forget my endorsement. Newt you’ve officially jumped the shark.
