ALBANY, N.Y. – In a Republican Party struggling to find its identity, the surprise withdrawal of the chosen GOP candidate for a New York congressional race amid a rising conservative upstart renews a lingering national debate: Are moderates welcome in today's Grand Old Party?

The question became even more relevant Sunday when the ex-candidate, state Assemblywoman Dierdre Scozzafava, threw her support behind the Democrat in the race rather than the Conservative Party candidate favored by fellow Republicans.

The GOP leadership insisted on Sunday political TV talk shows the party is strong and inclusive while Democrats described a Republican party out of touch with the people.

"We accept moderates in our party, and we want moderates in our party. We cover a wide range of Americans," said Republican House Leader John Boehner in an interview on CNN's "State of the Union."

SCOZZAFAVA is no moderate, AP's Valerie Bauman! It's nice that you are transcribing DNC talking points though.

Yes, you are out of touch with the party - all parties. Fortunate for you that the Democrats are much more out of touch with America.

Boehner is part of the problem not part of the solution.

“We are in the middle I think of a political rebellion going on in America and this rebellion are by people who really have not been actively involved in the political process and they don’t really care whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican they want to see people who are going to stand up and protect the future for our kids and grandkids,” Boehner said...

"We accept moderates in our party, and we want moderates in our party.
"moderate" is the code word for RINO.

We cover a wide range of Americans," said Republican House Leader John Boehner . . .
. . . as long as they're to the left of conservatives.

And John - is recruiting radical leftists into the GOP part of that picture you describe?

Presdient Reagan said that folks who agree with him 80% of the time were OK to come in the tent. He never said that liberal republicans who endorsed Jimmy Carter were welcome in that tent.

Boehner showed the GOP's problem. Its afraid to be a conservative party.

Sure moderates are welcome, they can donate all the money they want.

They just don't get to make policy, platform, publicity, or candidate decisions or have any input whatsoever.

Additionally they can keep their mouths shut unless praising fellow Republicans or condemning DemoRat traitors in the harshest possible terms.

WE WANT THE RINOS OUT..PERIOD. We need less DeDe’s, Grahams, and Snowe’s and MORE Sarah Palin’s and Michele Bachmann’s. If Sarah and Michele can help clean up this party then we have a chance of kicking some major ass in 2010 and 2012

That someone like Scozzafava can be called "moderate" with a straight face tells us how far we've fallen. I am so sick of libs getting to hide behind pretty words and phrases that are lies. "Progressive" and "Free Choice" come to mind.

MODERATE?

Does this mean that we just walk off the cliff, instead of running over it?

We have 'moderately' seeing our Country die as a Constitutional Republic since the Interstate Commerce ruling of the socialist SCOTUS of the 30's.

In Valerie Bauman’s world, a moderate Republican is a Democrat who registers Republican. I’m sure she’d be hard-pressed to define “moderate Republican”.

A “moderate” Republican is as likely to vote with the Rats as not. We don’t need people who do not understand the Constitution and think that the federal government can do anything that can get 51 votes in the Senate.

Of course, they are. If they are American moderates.

Liberals, however, are not.
