A week and a half ago, Conservative Douglas L. Hoffman was appearing on a nationally syndicated conservative talk show while Democrat William L. Owens was in New York City, attending a fundraiser with...Obama.
"I was in a dairy barn that night," said Republican Dierdre K. Scozzafava. "I was talking to a constituent about the dairy crisis."
"It struck me at the time that there was a little irony in it. Our congressional race had become a referendum on issues far from here," Ms. Scozzafava said...after announcing earlier in the day that she was suspending her congressional campaign. "Our area had become the battleground for people from outside the congressional district. And after the election is over, all of them will get back on their buses and go back home."***
Ms. Scozzafava said she had held her own in St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties...But in the eastern end of the congressional district where she was unknown, her opponents managed to portray her as a liberal...
After weeks of being attacked by national Conservative icons such as Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, The Whig Standard, Fred Thompson, the Club for Growth, the Washington Times and Sarah Palin, Mrs. Scozzafava said it's not surprising that people in the eastern end of the congressional district have a distorted view of who she is.
"I just didn't have the money to overcome what they were saying about me," she said. "With these talk shows constantly yammering and my opponent appearing on TV shows, the campaign was not about the issues in our congressional district."
Even former Gov. George E. Pataki decided to endorse her conservative opponent.
"George Pataki is probably to the left of me on some issues," Ms. Scozzafava said. "It leaves me a little baffled."

Hey, I didn’t get the message to go up there on the bus!! What?/s
That is true.
Thing is, whoever is elected will be voting on history changing, game changing national issues in the congress, not so much local issues. We have these massive deficits, out of control spendng, cap and trade, 0bamacare etc that need to be stopped, and Miss Scozzafava, we are not so sure you will vote the right way on these nation destroying issues, given your record in the New York State assembly.
“”Our area had become the battleground for people from outside the congressional district. And after the election is over, all of them will get back on their buses and go back home.”*** “
All true, but than she had to be stopped, for the good of the country.
re: Our congressional race had become a referendum on issues far from here
And so it should. When you become a member of an organization that decides what America does all over the world you can’t expect to run for office and have the voters consider only their own little part of that world. When you become one of a relatively few who make laws that affect every man, woman and child in America your voters are voting on a whole lot more than whether or not you can bring home the bacon. When your vote could mean the difference between the ailing health care system we have today and the absolute disaster that is being proposed to replace it those who vote for you have a huge greater stake in the future of America.
She is so typical of today’s politician. They get in office and immediately job one is making sure they stay in office. They do this by using OUR money.
She lost it when she called police on someone asking her a question.
All RINOs need to be gutted, skinned and eaten.
Well, yeah, Dede. That’s always true, to some extent. The problem is, it’s the voters in the district who get to decide, and they decided they didn’t like you very much.
Amen! Like Rush says, after the unintended consequences of their votes become apparent, they want to sit back as spectators, critiquing the country as if they didn’t have anything to do with what went wrong.
“”George Pataki is probably to the left of me on some issues,” Ms. Scozzafava said. “It leaves me a little baffled.””
Maybe if she looked at the sleeping in the bed next to her, she’d get a clue. He is the top union official for Northern New York State. If you have a guy that deeply enmeshed in the Democratic Party sleeping in the same room (but probably the side, in his case), people will wonder.
I wouldn't use it for a POTUS election, (we see what that got us) but for Congressional elections I think it's a brilliant strategy. If the Republican Party wants to support RINO's and DIABLO's, run a Conservative against them. There's really nothing to lose in districts where there's a sitting Liberal.....
“”George Pataki is probably to the left of me on some issues,” Ms. Scozzafava said. “It leaves me a little baffled.”
Foghorn Leghorn: “Awwwwww....now don’t you worry your itzy bitzy mind about it”
She’ll run again in the future. As a democrat!
Wonder how they will make that up? I for one am not send them any more money. Not as long as they support RINOS.
RINOs need to get with the program and support the other side of the tent for a change.
Response too soon.

“During the day Saturday, she (Scozzafava) began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens.”
Thanks, I understand you valid point and should have put that in the post.
But it is a pretty direct quote. If she truly said what is reported, it is devastating to her credibility.
The paper admits bias in the article.
If she really is “quietly and thoughtfully encourag[ing] her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens,” then we owe her nothing. I was asking her campaign people for an endorsement of Doug Hoffman. I accept the explanation about why she couldn’t endorse him when she dropped out. But if she’s really sneaking around encouraging Republicans to vote for a Democrat, she deserves nothing but contempt.
You may rest assured that I’ll be looking into this after Tuesday, but for now it’s GOTV.

Don’t rely on editorials. There’s no fact-checking. Even news stories in the New York Times are more reliable than any editorial.

Hoffman's homestead was in the district until gerrymandering cut it out. He's a local for sure.
