Honduras' interim government has buckled under international pressure and agreed to allow the return to power of Manuel Zelaya, the ousted President who was toppled in a military coup four months ago.
The breakthrough followed renewed pressure from senior US. officials who traveled to Honduras this week for a last-ditch effort to end the crisis.
"It is a triumph for Honduran democracy," said Mr Zelaya after the rival sides agreed to a deal that could see him reinstated as President in the coming days.
Earlier, Roberto Micheletti, the president of the interim government that took power after the coup on June 28 announced that he had agreed to reinstate his political rival
"I am pleased to announce that a few minutes ago my negotiating team signed an agreement that marks the beginning of the end" of the four-month standoff, Mr Micheletti said in a statement from the presidential palace.
Mr Zelaya was sent into exile at gunpoint on June 28 but returned secretly to Honduras last month where he has taken refuge in the Brazilian embassy.
Mr Micheletti said Zelaya could return to office after a vote in Congress that would be authorised by the country's Supreme Court. He said the deal would require both sides to recognize the result of a presidential election due to take place on November 29 and would transfer control of the army to the top electoral court.
The United States, the European Union and Latin American leaders had all insisted that Zelaya be allowed to finish his presidential term, which ends in January. They had said they might not recognize the winner of the November election unless democracy was first restored.

Me too. I pray and pray but it seems to do no good.
Skip to the back of the book - it turns out okay.
Communist coup: Obama overthrows constitutional government of Honduras
Never trust a Communist. Never appease them. You'll end up a slave, or dead.
This is a agreement favorable to Micheletti with headlines trying to make Obama look good.
I doubt the congressional vote will be to put Zelaya back in office. Even if it does, he will have extremely limited powers. Micheletti and Honduras won this thing handily, and are just letting the “international community” save face.
Hang in there. We as a people let evil get ahead now it will take some time to reverse the process. The more of us working on it the better. I think more people are starting to see the light. I just hope our young people eventually realize what is going on and join with us. I know some great kids who are on the right side, so it can be done.
Here is hoping we are right, and that any incident caused by manuel’s failure to live up to conditions placed on him does not cause a Venezuelan invasion, supported by the USA.

Great summation!
Didn’t he steal the equivalent of $2 million USD right before he left? They could reinstate him and immediately arrest him for grand theft.
“The breakthrough followed renewed pressure from senior US. officials who traveled to Honduras this week for a last-ditch effort to end the crisis.”
Not a “last ditch effort” ....a major threat of some kind.
“Communist coup: Obama overthrows constitutional government of Honduras “
Likely the perfect headline repair job.
So Mel will be reinstated...
By the time their Congress votes on it it will be after November 29 and a new leader will be elected......
That is unless Stupid, Castro, Ortega and Chavez try to rewrite the Honduran Constitution, AGAIN!!!
looks like Zelaya stole a few million on the way out
te return of Z is not as easy as it looks.
I believe there were accusations (and video) of his associates loading up a great deal of cash. He needs to be arrested and jailed and put on trial as soon as he sets foot out of the embassy.
