ALBANYFormer House speaker Newt Gingrich never mentioned Doug Hoffman's name during a radio appearance this morning, but had a clear message for Republicans in the 23rd Congressional District: "The vote you're going to cast for a third-party candidate is going to guarantee the election of a Democrat. If you think that adding another vote to Nancy Pelosi's majority is a good idea, that keeping Nancy Pelosi as speaker is a good idea, then it's fine. But don't kid yourself."
"John McHugh is a moderate Republican, he's held the seat for a very long time, I think 20 years," Gingrich, who has endorsed Republican Dede Scozzafava, told Joe Donahue on WAMC's The Roundtable. "She's not dramatically different from McHugh. So in that sense, it would be like electing someone who's like a Republican from that part of the state."
Gingrich then sounded a similar theme as an appearance on Fox News earlier this week where he called out Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty for endorsing Hoffman.
"But the question I raise to all of my friends around the country is, if we all claim we don't want Washington to be in charge of everything and we all claim we want local control, and we want the 10th Amendment respected and we want to return power to the state and local level, how come when the New York State Republicans in four separate meetings make the same unanimous choice and at all four meetings pick Dede Scozzafava, how come that's somehow not good enough?" Gingrich said. "And we're now going to impose our judgment from all over the country even though we don't live there, we weren't part of the meetings, we didn't see hat happened, and I think that's a very bad policy. I think that we have some obligation to respect the fact that Georgia's not the same as New York and New York's not the same as California, and California's not the same as Alaska. I think we ought to be a little cautious about trying to impose our national genes on a local community."
Newt, meet shark.
Screw the rinos I am donating to hoffman.
This is the SAME rationale Republicans used on us to vote for Mc nutsky...
NO....there was no choice other than McLame and zer0bama ... no third party.....there is here....
Newt is a Neut.
A vote for GOP leftist Scozzafava is a vote for conservatism! A vote for conservative Hoffman is doubleplusungood.
“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.”
Gingrich has become an out and out scumbag.
“Gingrich is a RINO and a Pelosi groin leech.”
In the McCain, Graham mold. Scum.
4 letters Newt, 4 little letters — S T F U!!!!!
Hey Newt, Pelosi is better than Scozzafava. Does that tell you anything?
Gingrich is a superannuated none-entity.
If this warmed over hasbeen SERIOUSLY thinke he is a contender for President, the GOP didn;t learn anything from John McCain.
You need a younger, more personable candidate, one who isn’t living in the Wonderland of Global Warming Fairy Tales.
I’m not voting for the lesser of evil anymore, I did that for the last time in 2008......I’m voting for the man or the woman, I refuse to be scared into voting for the wrong person.
He should go on a tour with Howard Dean. YEEEARGGGHGGHGH
Remember something VERY IMPORTANT...
The Republican Party IS NOT a “Conservative” Party. It is more conservative than the Democrats, but not by a whole lot.
MANY Republicans feel the social issues important to Conservatives and the Christian Right like Abortion, Gays, Welfare, Etc, are KILLING THEM, and make them vunerable to liberal propoganda attacks.
In many ways, that is CORRECT. Wrong-minded, but it’s still correct. The Conservative message has no champion these days, and gets lost under the constant barrage of leftist attacks parrotted by a largely gay and Democrat media.
It must be hard for ole Newt, when so many people reject his wisdom.
In the last few days Ive gone from like and respect to disagree to now where Im starting to hate Newt’s guts. I dare say Im not alone.
I don’t care, Newt. Screw you and the GOP. This is about principle and America. I’m not supporting do-nothing, stand-for-nothing, go-along, get-along, namby-pamby, bullsh!t republicans ever again.
No matter what Gingrich says, I fear the damage has been done. I suspect that the GOP is gonna lose this seat because of the fracture in the GOP.
The sad part is that this fracture is not your typical moderate vs conservative battle. Scozzafava is at best only nominally a Republican. Her stances are to the left of many moderate or even liberal Republicans. The GOP in NY’s 23rd CD should never have even entertained the idea of her candidacy.
Worse yet, the Democrats will point to this election (if Owens wins) as proof that the Democrats are posied to win big in 2010. They’ll completely ignore the results from Virginia or even the King County (Wash) Executive’s race. And the media won’t question the Dems’ assertion either.
I sincerely hope that Hoffman can win this election and hopefully shut the Dems up - fast!
Time to purge those who are squishy on the moral social issues, then.
Give the electorate a real choice between anything goes perversion and traditional values.
Newt...how much are the commies paying you behind the scenes? STFU.
