"The bridge closure was expected to cause a traffic nightmare during the morning commute. The California Highway Patrol was alerting Bay Area transit operators about the closure so they could try to prepare for a crush of additional passengers Wednesday."

Well, they can start spending some of that shovel ready money now I guess.

No, no...obviously Bush’s fault.
And - of course - since it’s an engineering problem, completely beyond the Obamaloon administration capability to detect and fix.

I know. No doubt CAL TRANS and a couple of lawyers are taking a long hard look at this.

Silly Coyote. It’s more important for the Obama administration to queer up elementary schools than it is to fix roads and bridges.

whats up with these bridges ???
Decades of infrastructure funding redirected to social programs, pork, and fraud.
I have a feeling that things will get a whole lot worse in the near future, and that's just what you can see.
Underground in most major cities, it's even worse.

If ACORN or SEIU can’t be given money to fix it then Obama doesn’t care. Obviously bridge engineering and fixing is for those evil rich people - the “rich” who don’t grease Obama’s palm.

Bridges require constant safety inspections. Even when engineers determine that fixes must be implemented, the politicians stall. It’s more important to have Medicare for illegal aliens and condoms for elementary school children than it to fix the infrastructure of America. One must have priorities.

“...a major bridge connecting San Francisco and Oakland”
“The bridge, a California landmark...”
“...a piece of metal roughly 3 feet long fell onto the bridge’s westbound lanes...”
“The bridge closure was expected to cause a traffic nightmare during the morning commute...”
Did anyone else notice that the article never identifies to which bridge they are referring? Leave it to the Fresno Bee!
I guess we can assume the Bay Bridge, but you know what they say about making an ASS(of)U(&)ME.

Things have gotten so bad in San Francisco that now even the bridge is jumping off the bridge!

No matter the snide comments that arise on this thread, the response appears commensurate with the event. If the bridge is new, then the investigation should pinpoint whether the design was bad or the implementation was off. (Note: Failure to properly understand the loads due to rush hour traffic is a requirements/design issue.)
If the bridge is older, one would need to decide if the installation had been degraded by time and weather, as well.

I wouldn’t worry too much. I hear that the bridge is too big to fail.
