Obama set to lose first election test in Virginia’s governor race
Times Online (U.K.) ^ | October 28, 2009 | Giles Whittell

Posted on 10/27/2009 10:59:39 PM PDT by Schnucki

Soon after polls closed on November 4 last year, officials announced the most momentous state result of the night. Barack Obama had become the first Democrat in 40 years to win Virginia. The race for the White House was effectively over.

Next Tuesday, barring an electoral earthquake, the Democratic candidate for Governor of Virginia will lose to a Republican, possibly by a double-digit margin. In the Democrats’ first big test at the polls since Mr Obama swept to power, his aides have been reduced to spreading the blame for Creigh Deeds’s presumed defeat in private briefings.

Despite the bad blood, Mr Obama campaigned alongside Mr Deeds for the first time yesterday in a state contest seen by many as a referendum on the President’s first year in office — and an important indicator of his chances of re-election in 2012.

His goal, as one analyst put it, was “to narrow the gap so that a massive landslide becomes merely a big win” for Virginia’s Republicans.

In New Jersey the Democratic incumbent has clawed his way back to neck-and-neck in the polls — but only after a singularly unpleasant television campaign making fun of the Republican challenger’s weight.

The gubernatorial races have been overshadowed on Mr Obama’s agenda by healthcare reform and Afghanistan but a poor showing by the Democrats in either state at a time of historic disarray among Republicans would be wounding for the White House. Bob McDonnell, the Republican candidate in Virginia, has bucked the national trend with a campaign aimed squarely at white conservatives in the state’s rural west. He has championed offshore drilling to boost domestic energy supply, condemned gun control efforts despite the massacre of 32 students at Virginia Tech university two years ago and has an 11-point lead in the polls.

an 11-point lead in the polls

I'd call that significant.

Have you ever been to New Jersey? I don’t think making fun of someone’s weight is a smart strategy.

Virginia is going to be a landslide for Republicans. Huge buyers remorse in this state regarding the fraud Obama and inept democrats.

It's BUSH'S fault

Bush's fault chant is over. Barry and Co are beating a dead Texan Horse and they know it. If one doesn't believe Barry is desperate, remember Saturday. God only knows what a WH stuffed with communist Pratt boys (void of testerone) will do with the powers that be. Personally, I am comforted by a fact, that my city police chief is older and wiser!

Assuming McDonnell goes on to win it's important not to fool ourselves into thinking it's statewide repudiation of Zero. Zero won Virginia for two reasons:

1. Virginia is 20% black, far higher than the national average, and those voters turned out in mass and 95% of them voted for Zero. These voters haven't gone anywhere and their enthusiasm for Zero hasn't waned one iota.

2. RINO McCain failed to energize conservatives, and he still wouldn't.

As it stands now, were the presidential race to be repeated with the same candidates, I have little doubt that Zero would win Virginia again. The margin would be smaller due to some independent turns, but the outcome would likely be the same.

Last year’s turnaround in VA was due to many factors, not the least of which was ACORN.

One factor few speak of, tho, is out-of-state college students who registered to vote in VA. For whatever reason, VA and NC are popular places for students from the northeast. Those blue-state natives’ votes would be meaningless electorally back home, but were incredibly valuable in VA and NC. So all they had to do was register with their college address instead of ‘home,’ and they could sway the vote. And, they did.

I hope our soon to be newly elected governor and the state legislature will work to tighten Virginia’s election laws. If these out-of-state students insist on registering illegally to vote in VA, they would thereafter be ineligible for funding and/or attending a college in VA. And maybe some hefty fines and jail time.

Not the first time. 0bama was there a few months back to campaign for Deeds if I recall correctly.

Groan!
Do the British always have to imply that Republicans are racist?
The writer should read this poll:

“SurveyUSA says that McDonnell is winning 21 percent of African-Americans, who usually give at least 90 percent of their votes to Democratic candidates”
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2372253/posts

condemned gun control efforts despite the massacre of 32 students at Virginia Tech university two years ago and has an 11-point lead in the polls”

He just doesn't get it does he?
We need gun rights laws precisely because of the Virginia Tech massacre. If everyone had guns, that killer woulda been cut down before he did to much damage.

If these college students fulfill the requirements to become legal residents of Virginia, in part to obtain in-state tuition, it will not be possible to prevent them from voting.

The issue here is whether these students, who registered as Virginia voters, were also legal residents of their home states.
That is voter fraud.

i think point 1 is true today but unless we see the redistributionist policies they expected their ardor will cool substantially.

Remember Louisiana's first post-Katrina election?

Bobby Jindal crushed the CRAP out of the idiot Landrieu or whatever his name was...carried well over 50% of the vote in a 3 or 4 person race.

THE MEDIA IGNORED THE PEOPLE'S REJECTION OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY!

My guess is the media have already written non-Obama-blaming stories about Virginia and New Jersey...complete with butt-kissing Rahm quotes.

“the Democratic candidate for Governor of Virginia will lose to a Republican, possibly by a double-digit margin”

It will most certainly be a double digit margin. One poll has it at 17%. The most favorable poll for Deeds has him down 11%. Personally, I’m looking forward to a 20% margin. Can you say blowout?
