Name of the game: Cut your losses (Virginia Gov Race)
Politico ^ | 10/27/2009 | Curt Anderson

Memo to the White House political smart guys:

It’s not that the body isn’t cold yet; it’s that the body is not even dead yet.

There will be plenty of time after the election for you to explain that Creigh Deeds’s loss in Virginia had nothing to do with the president’s 25-point drop in job approval.

It had nothing to do with the fact that a majority of Americans in every survey disapprove of the policies the president is advocating.

Nothing to do with the 4.2 million jobs lost since Inauguration Day.

Nothing to do with the 36 percent rise in unemployment over the first six months of this presidency.

Nothing to do with the skyrocketing debt and deficit or the federal government takeover of the auto industry and the banking sector.

Nothing to do with the fact that Deeds is openly advocating tax increases for the state, just as your administration is preparing to do at the federal level.

And certainly nothing to do with the president’s continual push to create a government-run health care system.

No, those are all completely disconnected and not relevant to Deeds lagging in the polls. This is all about Deeds, the guy who is now terrible but who, a few months ago, was a very impressive candidate who won a stunning come-from-behind primary victory.

You know the guy I’m referring to, the guy who former Gov. and now-Sen. Mark Warner praises on Deeds’s website, saying, “No one is more qualified to lead us now” and the leader who Gov. Tim Kaine says, also on Deeds’s website, “will keep Virginia moving in the right direction” and who President Barack Obama claims in an ad, currently on television in the Washington market, is “somebody who is cut from the same cloth, somebody who has that same vision for the commonwealth.”

Oh, what’s that you say? That was just politics? You didn’t mean that? I see.

We all know the game here: Cut your losses. But it is incredibly unseemly to trash your own candidate with 10 days to go in an election.

As for the postelection spin game, have at it. In fact, I wish you great success. The more people you are able to convince that Deeds’s loss — which, I remind you, has not happened yet — has nothing to do with the unpopularity of your administration’s policies, the better.

I agree: All of your candidates next year need to ignore Bob McDonnell’s victory over Deeds, should it occur, in a state the president carried by 7 points last year and where the current Democratic governor is the head of the Democratic National Committee.

Please do ignore the canary in the coal mine.

And he didn't even touch upon the treasonous "foreign policy" ones!

That’s because DemonRATs don’t bathe often. Some of them don’t even use toilet paper.

The low-class ones just apply more Patchouly, and the upper-crust ones just apply more upscale after-shaves and perfumes.

Obamao is coming to VA today to stump for Deeds yet again.
It should hurt Deeds even more, and if it does RATs may start avoiding
the chosen one for X____________.

Obama is coming to Nofolk’s ODU Ted Constant Center at 5:00pm closing down 45th to 43rd and by default, probably Hampton Blvd. at RUSH HOUR!

The only ones who got tickets were the churches Deeds spoke at this weekend (no brainstorming now, democrat, of course) and those who support Deeds who are to give tickets to other supporters.

Obama and the DNC are dreaming if they think that Obama baritone is still giving shivers up some braindead legs.

The rants are not pretty about the timing and the absolutely insane idea that closing down a significant part of Norfolk at rush hour is hunky-dory.

Not to mention that our Governor Tim 'King' Kaine who is moonlighting as the DNC chairman will take a lot of heat from the DNC faithful for losing the race. Schmuck can't even help carry the state even given the perfect storm demographics that makes up Northern VA and the Tidewater area.

I worked in a building where Deeds showed up for a press interview. Standing in the lobby when he came in and he walked right by everyone present. Must have been 15 or 20 people just standing around. His 'handler' whispered in his ear before they got to the elevators and Deeds turns around and comes back to shake everyone's hand with a big fake smile on his kisser. Well everyone except mine which was not offered, I just said good morning and stared at him.

Same lobby, the previous day McDonnell comes in to do an interview with the same agency. McDonnell comes up the steps with a smile on his face and laughing with his aides. As soon as he steps in the lobby he acknowledges everyone there with a smile and a wave. Proceeds to meet with everyone and spend a minute with them if they had something to say. Thanks everyone and heads for the elevator. His hand I shook.

Same lobby on several occasions Gov. King Kaine. Kaine parks in the underground space, takes elevator directly to meeting and leaves by the same route. Never saw his face or his hand which is probably best.

Deeds wasn’t exactly a top tier candidate either, he won his primary by the other candidates knocking each other out of the race, it would have been a miracle for him to win.

No, he publicly stated that he would only devote 30% of his time to DNC activities. We the muddled masses of VA get most of his benevolence.

What the Democrats have not realized is that Deeds is not that bad as a candidate. He’s as good as Kaine anyway and Kaine wasn’t ever this far behind. The Democrats are in BIG trouble if they can’t get some numbers for this guy.
