New Yorkers are fleeing the state and city in alarming numbers -- and costing a fortune in lost tax dollars, a new study shows.
More than 1.5 million state residents left for other parts of the United States from 2000 to 2008, according to the report from the Empire Center for New York State Policy. It was the biggest out-of-state migration in the country.
The vast majority of the migrants, 1.1 million, were former residents of New York City -- meaning one out of seven city taxpayers moved out.
"The Empire State is being drained of an invaluable resource -- people," the report said.
What's worse is that the families fleeing New York are being replaced by lower-income newcomers, who consequently pay less in taxes.

Look at Detroit, New Yorkers, and quake.
Fail.
Just as Rush predicted. LOL
Atlas continues to shrug.
the great progressive-welfare-parasite
drains its hosts to depletion.
Come here down South, just do NOT vote Democrat!!!
They are losing taxpayers and gaining taxpaiders.
Just don’t bring the same party ideas you had while in NY to the new place you escape to. Stop sh$%^ing where you sleep!
But, they come down here and start complaining immediately. And wanting exactly what caused their problems in NY.
No way! Why didn’t anyone see this coming??? :O
Didn't Billy Joel predict this in "Miami 2017" way back in 1975?
Ah, yes. New York Democrats.
Tax, tax, fee, fee, fine, tax, tax, fine, fine, fee, fee, fine, penalty, penalty, fine, tax, tax, tax, tax, tax, regulation, fine, fee, regulation, penalty, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, penalty, tax, tax, tax, regulation, fee, fee, tax, fine, regulation, penalty, tax, tax, tax, regulation, penalty, fine, fee, fee, fee, fee, fee, fee, fee, regulation, penalty, fine, regulation, fee, tax, tax, tax, tax, penalty, etc...
But you can’t escape Uncle Sam. That’s the worrisome part of the federal government’s never ending growth and usurpation of the states. The growing fed tax burden will get you whether you are in NY, NV, NM, FL or wherever.
Oh, those pesky unintended consequences.
One out of seven NYC taxpayers! That’s simply staggering.
Thats’ the problem when the come they haven’t learned a DAMN THING! And the continue to vote ‘Dim’. Look at Colorado and New Mexico for examples.
Yeah! Let’s tax the rich! That’ll work!
the Empire State is being drained of an invaluable resource -- people,
As if the state is completely a victim of circumstances beyond their control.
NY City and State have painted themselves into a corner.
They have long since passed the point where raising taxes actually lowers tax revenue. Also, with Wall St. now in the dumps, possibly for many years, that revenue will be gone also.
