Gingrich: 'You can't have a purely right-wing majority' Posted: October 26th, 2009 12:03 PM ET
From CNN Radio's Bob Constantini
WASHINGTON (CNN) Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has taken considerable heat from conservative activists for endorsing Republican Dede Scozzafava over Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in next month's special congressional election in New York.
But Gingrich is defending his approach to re-building the Republican Party. It begins, he said, by accommodating those who might disagree with you.
"Both parties have to recognize, you can create a center-right majority in America, which we did with Reagan in '80 and we did it again with the 'Contract with America' in '94," Gingrich said in an interview with CNN Radio. "You can't have a purely right-wing majority; you can't have a purely left-wing majority."
The former speaker claimed that Democrats are doing their part to help the GOP by promoting a liberal ideology. "Today, the Democrats are moving toward a secular-socialist model that is guaranteed minority in America," he said.

I never liked Newt and spared with many here on FR who thought he could be President. I told them he was a fake, a wife cheat, and caould not be trusted.
I am vindicated! Keep talking Newt, you can never be President now!
I agree. If there were any doubt about how out of touch they are, the whole Scazzafubar business caps it. You’re right, she doesn’t even meet minimal standards for Repubs, much less conservatives. Newt’s desperation to regain relevance has, imho, led him to sell his soul. He might as well just call David Gergen now and set up a twenty-year standing date for Saturdays on the pariah porch.
(On another thread you mentioned you had been responding to me a lot—fine with me-I enjoy your posts. I came across this one you wrote, on another thread).
“Seriously, the policies of the left have historically led to the biggest human evil events imaginable”.
Thought you might enjoy this quotation from the great Eric Hoffer about the same topic:
“The monstrous evils of the Twentieth Century have shown us that the greediest money grubbers are gentle doves compared with money-hating wolves like Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler, who in less than three decades killed or maimed nearly a hundred million men, women, and children-and brought untold suffering to a large portion of mankind”.
Do you really believe that Palin and DeMint are so “far right” of the populace in general? Which issue(s) would Palin and Demint advocate that would repulse the majority of American voters?
Wish we’d seen these attitudes towards RINOS for the 1998 and 2000 primaries.
Yes, I believe it and the polling backs it up. Palin has huge negatives among independents and the senator from SC comes across as a poster boy for the white southern neanderthal. BTW, I am a white southern male liberterian and economic conservative.
You obviously didnt read my post. Obama cleverly ran as a center left moderate. You and I knew he was on the extreme left, but he fooled the real moderates. Bush ran as a center right moderate, God only knows what his philosophy was if he has one. After 4 years of Bush even a lefty like Kerry almost won, but he lost. It proves my point. If the GOP runs a true far right candidate they will get buried. They have got to come up with a Reaganesque type, if one exists. You can bet your last money on this.
....She is not some right wing wacko....
But she is perceived as one by a majority of the electorate and perceived as not a very bright one at that. Perception is everything in politics.
I remember when Reagan was ridiculed - the “Bed Time for Bonzo” - nice looking king of the B movies guy who hung out with a monkey when he wasn’t being a cowboy. They thought he was an intellectual dummy (they didn’t know he taught himself to read at age 5) and no one would ever take him seriously. He was elected governor anyway. He started to be known for his down to earth one liners (zingers) that really got his message across. I’ll stop there. Is this ringing any bells?
Of course I get your drift, but she is not Reagan, and never will be. I have my opinion that there is not now a 100 percent true conservative that could win a national, repeat national election. We have two years to find one. The governor of Louisiana probably comes closest and he had that horrible debut on national tv which really hurt him.
BTW, I just saw a poll that indicates the independent conservative in the NY House race is starting to pull support from the GOP liberal. That is a truly conservative district that hasnt had a Democrat in eons. If the Democrat wins that one I dont know what to say.
Conservatives had been doing that for years, only to see those 'Moderates' they had tolerated, turn on them and start voting more with Democrats, and against Republican principles. It is those Moderates, who are unwilling to support a conservative, as witnessed by their screeching about Sarah Palin as John McCain's veep candidate. They want conservatives to be tolerant of them, but they never seem to want to return the favor.
“It begins, he said, by accommodating those who might disagree with you.”
Newt, you old fool...that is called SURRENDER. Like your GOP guru- \buddy Grover Norquist who stated his goal was to become one of the ‘squishy middle’, you’ve sold out.
Bears repeating!
Newt should take a seat now in the David Brooks, Ed Gillespie, George Will, All Bushes, Kathleen Parker, Peggy Noonan, John McCain bleachers
You are absolutely wrong. The largest plurality, forty percent of the electorate, describe themselves as conservative, and I can guarantee you that to a person they are more conservative than any current national figures, including Palin and DeMint. These two are centrist, but just happen to come closer to conservative than most other politicians.
.....absolutely wrong....
