That the GOP should somehow do whatever it takes to become more moderate, to build a bigger tent over those in the center and on the center-left, is exactly the wrong answer for the party and, more importantly, for the country which depends upon its traditional common sense, values and restraint. The Republican Party must instead patch the holes in the proverbial tent over those on the political right who have been left out in the rain since George W. Bush began his second term. Republicans must focus intently on the proper role of the federal government with regard to every issue, from taxation to abortion to economic policy and even to gay marriage. They must reassure the American people that, across the board, the answer is always less government, not more, and that the people--not the government--are the only honest, safe depositories of freedom and natural rights.
Michael Smerconish has coupled his own unpredictable, erratic political ideology with poorly-interpreted numbers and come to the conclusion that America needs pale pastels rather than the bold colors advocated by Ronald Reagan. As we saw during the latter half of the Bush administration, moderate Republicans can spend and expand the size, scope and reach of the federal government has much as any progressive. And, as we saw during last year's election, not to mention the mid-term elections in 2006, moderate Republicans simply do not win.

Republicans have a knack for seeing a problem and coming up with exactly the wrong answer. Usually it is the opposite of what its base is telling them to do.
Also, I explained to Smerkonish on radio that you cannot ask pro-lifers to abandon their views on life issues, rather liberal GOPers need to abandon theirs. I cannot vote for a pro-abortion republican hoping to get tax relief because taxes and human life are not equal issues. I could easily vote for a GOPer who may raise taxes (compromising my beleif on that issue) if he or she will defend human life. Since pro-abort GOPers don’t believe a life is at stake in abortion, let them modify their view on that issue and crame their way into the tent.
I couldn’t care less if the OP(formerly the GOP) self destructs. Conservatives are becoming a force to replace the OP.
I’m with you!
Be Ever Vigilant!
Our tent is plenty big enough right now. Let those who want to be under it come on in! Let those who don't just get the hell out. Put signs all over the outside of the tent explaining exactly what those in the tent stand for and are willing to sacrifice to see come to pass. If someone reads the signs and doesn't feel like they agree with those in tent, feel free to find another tent, or build one themselves.
You never win by having to force or coerce people to join your team. Tell ‘em what the tent stands for and let them decide. If you have to coerce them into your tent you'll never have their full support. You are better off without them. Nothing’s worse than thinking you can depend on someone when the chips are down, only to find they aren't there when the feces hits the fan.
Agreed one hundred percent. The tent is the tent. No need to court La Raza, or NOW, or any other group. The tent is the tent.
