I recently wrote an article for Shotgun News making the argument that while open carry of firearms is legal in many American cities, it may not be particularly wise. Open carry in a number of states is not just legal, but protected by the state constitution. But just because something is legal, even constitutionally protected, doesnt mean that it is wise.
Carrying a gun openly in a city can and does offend people who might not have a strong opinion one way or the other about gun control. Boise, Idaho, is about as pro-gun as any big city in the United States. But open carry advocates decided last year to go to the Boise Zoo with openly carried handguns. It was completely legal but the reaction of other patrons was distinctly negative.
We have a very reasonable concealed weapon permit law in Idaho (as with most states), and there are lots of Idahoans who are armed but carry their weapons concealed. Im sure that the other patrons of the Boise Zoo know that. Yes, it is somewhat illogical to be disconcerted by seeing something in public that you know may still be all around you, but concealed. But there are a lot of areas where human beings are illogical and pretending that you are Mr. Spock doesnt change that human beings often respond with emotions, not logic.
Handguns and our excretory organs have something in common: we know that they are very, very common, they are necessary, and many people have them under their clothes./....

Question bump:
Whats a good gun that can shoot .223 that would be a good backup for a Mini-14?
Possibly thinking something bolt action here...
Open carriers have fewer encounters with BG’s per capita because the visually displayed firearm is a deterrent.
If open carry is so unwise then why do the police carry openly? I don't buy that crap about cops being better trained. They aren't.
Most OC’ers wouldn't ever find themselves in a situation where they had to be the aggressor in confronting someone.
be grateful...you’ll live longer statistically
Look into the CZ Model 527, a number of variants chambered in .223. Very nice guns, and affordable.
Thanks.
So far, the recommendations have been a Remington (Ar-15 type), a Saiga, and the CZ.
Gun show returning in two weeks.
They had a few (not many) of the AK-47 .223 models but a guy warned me against them saying the clips would cost an arm and a leg...
Right now, I have more than one gun that can shoot the .30 carbine rounds, more than one gun that can shoot .22 and I wanted something to go along with my Mini-14
I doubt I will worry about a backup for my S&W .40 pistol, that’s a pretty sturdy little beast!
And I’ve only got a few hundred rounds for it anyways.
BTW, there was a guy at the show selling a Mini-14 and clips.
He was selling FACTORY MADE 30 round clips.
FACTORY MADE by RUGER!
I guess Ruger backed off the “nobody needs more than 5 rounds” rubbish!
When people are intimidated by the custom of appearing unarmed, to a point where they become unarmed, the issue is mute
What about.....
When people are intimidated by the custom of appearing armed, to a point where they become unarmed, the issue is deadly.
Big Ping. We agree, there are slaves and then there are armed citizens. The latter is the only hope of the former.
Ditto. I want their last thought to be “Oh shit!”
