The September unemployment stats for Michigan came out this week and they are high as expected.
Mlive.com highlighted the statistics on a municipal level, showing the five cities with the highest jobless rates are all over 25 percent. The cities of Highland Park and Pontiac, which leaned heavily on auto-related employment, had the highest unemployment with 35.2 percent of residents reportedly jobless. Both cities have declared bankruptcy in the recent past. Highland Park recently emerged from state receivership and Pontiac just slipped under state control last year.
While the overall states unemployment rate is the highest in the nation at 15.3 percent, the top five hardest hit cities in the state are all former automobile production hubs.
According to Mlive.com:
1.Highland Park 35.2% 1. Pontiac 35.2% 3. Detroit 27.9% 4. Flint 26.3% 5. Port Huron 25.7%
What do these statistics mean for residents in these cities? Many are packing up and heading out of state to find work, like one Detroiter who went as far as creating a website and a PayPal account seeking donations to help him leave the city.
The former Detroiter wrote on his Help me leave Detroit page, which features photos of crime and drug houses in his neighborhood:
I live in Detroit. I am a skilled pipefitter, yet I am unemployed. Detroits unemployment rate is at a record 28.7 percent. 1/3 of Detroiters live at or below the poverty line. Crime is rampant. My house has been burglarized 9 times. My car window was bust by a thief who I caught breaking into the house down the street.
The blogging plumber is not alone. In April the Detroit News reported that every 12 minutes Michigan loses a family seeking work. The article noted that approximately 109,000 more people left Michigan in 2008 than moved in.
This state exodus is not helping the situation any. Detroit News Ron French writes:
The families who are leaving young, well-educated high-income earners are the people the state desperately needs to rebuild.
The lions ain’t too good either. LOL
The economy is so bad in Michigan that after screwing every Michigander and some twice Jenny is back to doing her metro sexual husband. It is so bad here that yesterday I saw a pimp driving a Yugo. It is so bad here that I saw someone break into a car and leave two lions tickets on the front seat. We are paving everything here with stimulus money. But what they should do is just pave the roads going south and east. That is where all the traffic is. Out of the state
I grew up in the 60’s in a small MI town and we had one Jewish family the Sleudelbergs, that owned the dry goods store. The son, Arnold, was in in my grade school class and cub scout den.
I believe the Sleudelbergs were originally Dutch.
At any rate we little Gentiles would try to get Arnold to teach us curse words in “his” language and would proudly tell one another “yaben stow” (my recollection of the words).
During a den meeting hosted by Arnold’s mother she overheard us. We feared the worst but Mrs. Sleudelberg only asked in a puzzled voice why we were telling one another ‘you are naughty’.
I understand Arnold went on to become a rabbi.
Such a nice boy. :)
thanks I will post it onthe tv thread.
“The Jews are leaving MI?”
All but the Levins. They recently purchased Mackinaw Island and will be moving into the Grand Hotel this spring.
Yeah and Jenny didn’t even kiss me when she was done!!!!
At least she could have told me to “Put Some Ice on It.”
Southfield, a suburb of Detroit has many Jewish people.
LOL! That’s Hilarious.. :^)
Of course, I was there through the Engler years, so Michigan was a booming place and businesses were going up on every availaable corner and empty lot!... except in Mayor Soulman Young's Detoilet, of course. They were busily engaged in looting and burning the place down even back then and long before.
Yep, if I ever see my current Congress Critter I am going to invite them to just visit the poor side of town, then explain their JOBS JOBS JOBS bill and how it works to the folks who need Jobs
Thanks grellis. There has been a LOT of pressure on the non-gov charitable infrastructure, such as food banks, the Salvation Army, etc.
I lived in different parts of the Detroit area until I was 10. When whites fled, there were quite a few Jews among them... because they could see part of what was coming, and they didn't want to live in a hellhole where they'd be targets.
Well, good luck to him. I for one wouldn’t advise fleeing to California (we’re hopefully leaving next year permanently), but I hope he gets his retraining and makes good.
The Detroit ruins sites are seriously sobering.
I have a house for sale in Michigan. If interested please let me know.
The Dimocrat and other corrupt politicians, unions, etc. ruined that city.
I could never have afforded a mansion in that city, but I look at some of the beautiful apartment buildings and normal-sized houses just rotting away or being torn down, and I wish I could have seen their insides, to see how it might have felt to live in them.
In particular I like the pictures of the ones with oddly-shaped rooms and windows (such as turrets or cupolas), where the building is either red brick or stone.
I will say, though, that I'm not a fan of using tax dollars to subsidize restoration of these buildings.
The folks who took videos of the Detroit ghetto areas, showing block after block after block of blasted landscape, with few houses still standing, were particularly brave, and I salute them. It's my understanding that these areas are no-go zones for any outsiders.
