Republicans going rogue in upstate New York
Christian Science Monitor ^ | October 24, 2009 | Patrik Jonsson

This fall's only congressional election, featuring a third-party conservative challenging the Republican nominee, tests the future of the GOP. Will the Tea Party insurgency prevail?

Atlanta

Pitting conservative purists against party pragmatists, a growing number of national Republican figures are bucking the party standard and backing a third-party candidate in the sole congressional election scheduled this year, upstate New York’s 23rd congressional district.

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, former Senator Rick Santorum, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, current Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann, former Tennessee Senator and presidential candidate Fred Thompson, and former presidential candidate Steve Forbes have all backed Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman over Republican Dede Scozzafava.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty — a potential presidential candidate in 2012 — suggested Friday on ABC News that he’s strongly considering backing Hoffman, as well.

“Our nation is at a crossroads, and this is once again a time for choosing,” Ms. Palin, author of the upcoming book, “Going Rogue,” wrote Thursday on her Facebook page. “This is the game-changer,” added Dick Armey, whose Freedom Works organization has supported the Tea Party movement.

Palin, et al. represent what can only be called the Tea Party insurgency, whose adherents point to mainstream Republicans — including party philosopher Newt Gingrich — and their support of Ms. Scozzafava as another sign that the GOP has strayed from its core principles.

Agreed - I should find out if Hoffman needs volunteers to man the polling places.

We have to get this country back one election, one district at a time.

Thanks for the info from Club for Growth — just saw their ad and discovered that Hoffman is a Conservative REPUBLICAN that is supported by the Conservative Party. This is a special election with different rules then the regular election.

No wonder Fred Thompson and Dick Armey endorsed Hoffman along with others because he is a Republican and the woman is an idiot that is running. All beginning to make sense now. RNC should NOT be wasting donor dollars on this race IMHO.

It would have been nice in all of these threads I have read to discover that Hoffman was a Conservative Republican but that wasn’t the case until I saw Club for Growth. Now if Club for Growth is wrong that Hoffman is NOT a Conservative REPUBLICAN then I would expect a retraction.

Every voter and every citizen should evaluate the candidates for themselves.

I do not agree with Hannity all of the time. Rush is good, but he doesn’t seem to like to make endorsements of candidates.

Mark Levin came out for Hoffman.

I think that it will take a big 2x4 to knock any sense into the current Republican party elite.

"I think that it will take a big 2x4 to knock any sense into the current Republican party elite".

Well it sure looks that way!

I guess I should include that in my informational posts. He is running as the Conservative party candidate because Scozzafava has the Republican line, but he has stated that if elected, he will caucus with the Republicans.

The whole “a Republican must win to support Boehner for Speaker” line of reasoning is a smokescreen. First, there won’t be an election for speaker until after the 2010 elections. It is doubtful that Scozzafava will win a primary in this district. Second, even if there was an election for speaker, Hoffman would support the Republican over the Democrat.

From the desk of

I support Doug Hoffman for Congress (PayPal).

Please, spread the word about this important election on November 3, 2009 in New York’s 23rd congressional district.

If the district goes to a Democrat so be it. But we'll know who fumbled away the seat if Hoffman doesn't win.

Donate directly to the candidate of your choice, not the RNC.

Online Tea Party

Both Doug Hoffman and Dede Scozzafava have pages on Facebook. Currently, Hoffman has 1,550 fans to 329 for the RINO.

This can be considered an online poll and serve as an embarrassment to the ACORN candidate.

“Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty — a potential presidential candidate in 2012 — suggested Friday on ABC News that he’s strongly considering backing Hoffman, as well.”

Some “leader”. Palin and Bachmann are way out in front on this showing leadership, while Pawlenty waffles.

Save your money Tim, you don’t stand a chance in 2012.

If the Dem wins, it is the same as if the liberal RINO wins. Same same.

The liberal RINO (better term is DIABLO -- Democrat In All But Label) would actually be worse. Not only will she vote with the Dems on every issue, she will give them "bipartisan" cover by doing so, AND she will have the seat tied up for the election in 2010 as the incumbent.

“If Hoffman looses, will we be hearing screams about how his supporters divided the party...”

Its way past due for the party to be divided. Hoffman has quite a list of supporters. Its gotta start somewhere. If we lose we lose. So be it. But, at least the RINOs are running scared. All we have to keep our eyes open for now are the fake conservatives, that will surely try to ride the coattails of this movement.

Exactly.

It may be factual, but I dont like the way this article is written in several places. The choice of words. Sounds like a lib writing this.

So is the Washington leadership. If the district goes to a Democrat so be it. But we'll know who fumbled away the seat if Hoffman doesn't win.

Don't worry about it. The seat is up again 2010. We need the conservative victory to show our fearless leaders at the RNC that they need to resign. In droves...

wasn’t about her past.

The title was a strategy.

We’re all going rogue now.
