I read somewhere recently that no one is testing anymore because the ONLY strain of flu currently in the USA is the H1N1 variety -- so if you have influenza symptoms, they immediately presume that you have H1N1, as no other type of flu has shown up yet.

I read a few years ago about a British doctor who leaned toward thinking the sharp rise in childhood asthma was caused by over-immunization, specifically against the childhood diseases. Don't know if anyone's actually studied it, though.

I wonder, if one was proactive and before they got sick, were to keep an onion in a jar throughout the flu season, would it absorb any germs brought home from school, work, wherever?

The pandemic is indeed present. We have seen numerous cases. Fortunately for the vast majority of people, they have little to no symptoms, or something on par with the common cold. However, those that get sick, get REALLY sick. Fortunately it is a small number of those infected. I do not see a national emergency here any more than with the regular cold and flu season.
