Top Republicans jump ship in NY-23
Andy Barr Fri Oct 23, 7:12 pm ET
Some of the most prominent names in national Republican Party politics are lining up against the GOP nominee in a key upstate New York House special election, the latest being former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who weighed in Friday.
In endorsing Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman in the Nov. 3 contest, Santorum joined former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, and former presidential candidate Steve Forbes, all of whom announced their backing for the conservative third-party candidate this week.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty suggested Friday that he might be the next well-known Republican to break with the party establishment and support Hoffman. When asked about the race Friday during an interview with ABC, he expressed frustration with GOP nominee Dede Scozzafava and said he will probably endorse in the race.
Scozzafava, a state assemblywoman who supports gay marriage, abortion rights and has a close relationship with leading labor officials in her region, has been the target of sustained criticism from conservatives who claim that she is so liberal that they cannot in good conscience support her candidacy. As evidence, they point to her unofficial endorsement from the leading liberal blog Daily Kos.
While Scozzafava can point to many other prominent conservatives who support her bidincluding former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Republican leaders on Capitol Hillthis weeks surge of leading conservatives to Hoffmans camp is a troubling sign for her campaign and the national GOP establishment since several of the recent Hoffman endorsers have significant followings and represent the most energetic part of the Republican base.

Amen. Newt is all over the board which appears self-serving. Conservatives can’t count on him as a consistent leader.
We all know that if you don't have the power to organize the House you can't control anything.
Still, it would be good for the family bag lady to step down and let the Conservative win this time ~ he'll vote WITH the Republicans AND, best of all, he'll help organize the House.
Where Sarah Palin leads, the others will follow.

I second that. Sarah could be just what the doctor ordered.
Newt is and should be named a Chameleon
Through 20 odd years of watching his shifting he has proven it to me at least.
As for the artical GOOD going for the Conservatives to say NO MORE supporting Rino's and Liberal's getting onto the conservative ticket.
The GOP’s national apparatus has not only dumped money down a rathole for the sake of a (figurative and literal) loser, they have blundered into a situation where people like Newt Gingrich are “outing” themselves. The former is unfortunate, the latter is serendipitous.
Are we heading toward two parties, Republicans and Conservatives? It seems the Democrat party is on a course toward self-destruction and will be only a fringe movement, while Republicans will go increasingly liberal to pick up disenchanted Democrats, and Conservatives will pick up disenchanted Republicans.
Both can “expletive deleted”.

When they swear to uphold it, they need to be able to mean that oath.
Sadly, George Bush, (both of them) Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, The two Maine-iac senators and a whole lot of other Rinos are not and never were true constitutionalists.
If Hoffman ends up winning this, will we see a major shift in the party? This is interesting - even more so than the gubenatorial races in NJ & VA.
This is a gamble for the GOP and the “Palin” conservatives. The status quo GOP sees the writing on the wall and is desperately trying to hang on to the party reins.
This is the first battle in the war for the GOP.
The bottom line issue is knowing who is on your side.
What good does it do to have Snowe in the Senate, when on important votes she abandons you, does not protect your back. In fact, she isn’t with us on most votes. What is really gained by keeping an acknowledged sympathizer of the enemy camp free to roam within your camp?
Why have Scozzafava if she’s simply going to vote against you? Why not have the lines drawn so you can at least count your votes accurately?
If your supposed friend shoots at you from within your own lines, all you’ve done is aid the enemy.
Once we have that back where it belongs, we can get to work on the really heavy lifting and take our country back, too.
I find it fascinating to see who has endorsed up front. Those will be the names of the future leaders. Everyone else who endorses now will just be an “also endorsed”.
with the blue dogs failing to fall in line thus far you can probably argue both parties are in a splintering process. To my way of thinking, the 2 party system is not enough. I don’t want 6 or 7 like in some European countries but 4 could be perfect. I suspect the centrist dems would knock off quite a few libs and the conservatives would do the same to the Republicans.
And before i’m flamed, yes,i know theres a conservative party already but as of yet, and its not like its been a short time, they’ve not made an impact on the national stage. A few good men and women such as Sarah,DeMint,Thompson would give them plenty of standing nationally.

‘If you won’t represent our views.
Don’t claim to speak for us!’
I wish he would jump ship and swim far away. He is a "pseudo conservative" and a hack who is only in it for the money.
I am afraid that from now on, after this endorsement, Newt Gingrichs’ reasoning shall always be suspect in my mind.
