Delta Flight Attendant Serves Up Journals for American Troops

In between keeping her passengers safe and comfortable, Delta flight attendant Robin Schmidt tends to another mid-air mission -- passing journals among the rows so passengers can help her thank American troops.

Over the last five years, Schmidt has filled hundreds of passenger-written journals and sent them to the troops she "adopts" in Afghanistan and Iraq. Not connected in any way to the military, Schmidt said, "This is just part of who I am. This is what I do."

And on the other side of the world, she's got a lot of grateful military men and women.

"The soldiers often tell me when they get the journals it's hard for them to keep in their hands," Schmidt told ABCNews.com, adding that others carry the notebooks with them to read during low moments.

Thursday I was having lunch with two friends at one of my favorite BBQ places in South Tampa. As we arrived, I noticed about 7 airmen from nearby MacDill AFB at several tables. We called the manager over, told him to please see that we got their checks..they all came over afterwards to say thanks..when of course, it was we who were showing our appreciation in a small way. Got the chance to spend about 15 minutes chatting with them..wonderful people..focused, dedicated..and sooo young...or so it seemed to me..

” She’s careful...to hold her tongue when someone expresses displeasure about the journals.”

I didn’t realize that Michelle and Barack flew commercial.

In 1991 when I was returning home from Gulf I, the Delta flight attendants on our flight treated 2 buddies and me like absolute ROYALTY.

I have remained loyal to Delta ever since.

I belong to an online group called OperationWriteHome. We make cards for the military who are serving overseas. The cards are left blank inside. They are then sent to bases, and the heroes can pick cards for birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, or “love you” “miss you” and send them home to their loved ones. They get free postage. Anyway, it’s a wonderful organization, and I think everyone involved is a volunteer. They have sent over 165,000 cards in about 2 years. The military heroes are so grateful—it’s very touching.

This is a wonderful gesture and fine effort. I am however surprised that someone has not complained and Delta folded.

Thanks for doing this.
