The Mexican political parties also (bizarrely) appear to be the reverse of U.S. political parties on death penalty issues & getting "tough on crime".
Here in U.S., you usually see conservatives from the GOP cite high levels of crimes and promise tougher sentences, and/or promise to reintroduce and/or enforce the death penalty for the murderers, as a popular platform (Bush I famously defeated Dukakis by pushing this issue and showing how weak Dukasis was on crime). The other major party in the U.S., our generally leftist Democrats, favor death penalty laws for the most part but usually are comfortable with the status quo. The far-left third parties, like the Green Party, are the only ones demanding the death penalty be abolished, and claiming everyone in prison locked up for murder is a victim of racism and how the whole crime system persecutes minorities and innocent people.
Over in Mexico, the only party citing high levels of crime and citing lax enforcement, and demanding tougher sentences and reintroduction of the death penalty is the "far left" Mexican Green Party and other "fringe" groups. The "mainstream" generally leftist party in Mexico, the PRI, has no official stance on the matter but generally they would be OK with death penalty laws in certain circumstances, but they're pretty much comfortable with the status quo right now (no death penalty). The major "conservative" party in Mexico, PAN, is not only adamantly against the death penalty but even against life sentences for murderers, arguing the whole system is unfair and biased against the poor and minorities, blah blah blah. Free Mumia! lol.
I have also noticed that "Mexicans abroad" who support the "conservative" party in their own country (PAN), simultaneously support the most liberal politicians in the U.S. If you look at the vote totals in the southwestern U.S. and locate the areas with the highest support for hardcore socialist Dems like Obama, then look at the areas in the U.S. where "PAN" and Calderon got the most votes from Mexicans living in our country, it's the same regions.
Very weird phenomenon. And something we need to keep our eye on since the massive levels of Mexican immigration is increasing bringing their politics to our shores.
Where’d you find the breakdown of the Mexican vote in the US?
The Mexican government has the results available, but by the Mexican state the absentee ballots were cast for, not the US jurisdiction from where.
PAN seems to have cleaned up with the US vote.
