Feds lock down amberjack WITHOUT NOTICE during busiest fishing month

DESTIN — News that a federal agency had slammed the door on this year’s amberjack season without notice didn’t sit well Tuesday with charter fishermen.

They believe Big Brother is out to take their livelihood from them.

“They’re killing us,” said boat captain Thomas Swanson. “They’re flat killing us.”

Yup ... but the Barry-o thuggery don’t expect you to notice such things as shutting off the water to farming communities or shutting down 788 Chrysler dealerships which donated mostly to Republicans. [Amberjack is one of my favorites fishes, BTW.]

Yes. And since this is an issue that affects many different states due to them bordering, and sharing, the same waters as Florida, this makes it a federal issue. So, CONSTITUTIONALLY their case is lost. Period. They need to save their fight for true constitutional battles such as feds poking their noses in business belonging to the state in which no other state is affected.

That's a bummer. However, last weekend we froze loads of fillets, gag, cobia, and "mango"...so there are fish to be had.

So then you aren’t southern by choice? If you were raised in the south, then it wasn’t your choice.

You tried to shut down the discussion on that thread too.

Are you Obama’s fishing czar?

I can't claim any real knowledge of the amberjack population, but over-fishing is a well-known problem.

I don't know about Florida and the east coast, but here on the West Coast fisheries supposedly "over fished" didn't become "over fished" until predatory mammals like sea lions, seals, and sea otters became protected. The sea lion poulation on the California coast has exploded to the point of it being ridiculous. Those animals eat LOTS of fish.

In the town where I grew up, abalone was a vital commercial fishery that had supported local families for generations as well as lots of tasty enjoyment for sports divers. Sea otters made a come-back in the area, and within five years the abalone fishery (not to mention Pismo clams) had virtually disappeared. For years, politically-correct folks tried to blame it on over-fishing, until eventually even the pistol-packing Fish and Game crowd had to admit that human predators were not the culprit for the loss of abalone and Pismo clam populations.

US To Order Big Pay Cuts At Firms That Got Most Aid - NYT
Last update: 10/21/2009 2:47:39 PM

President Barack Obama’s administration will announce within days a plan to deeply cut compensation for top executives at companies that received the most federal aid during the financial crisis, the New York Times reported Wednesday, citing an official involved with THE decision.
Under the compensation plan, created by administration “pay czar” Kenneth Feinberg, the salaries of the top-paid 25 executives at each of the firms will be cut by an average of 90%, and total compensation will decline by an average of about 50%. Any executive at the firms who want more than $25,000 worth of so-called special perks, such as private planes or company cars, will be required to apply to the government for them, according to the Times.
Top executives at American International Group’s (AIG) financial products unit, which is considered the source of many of the insurer’s problems, will receive a maximum of $200,000 in total compensation.
The firms that will face the restrictions are AIG, Bank of America Corp. (BAC), Citigroup Inc. (C), General Motors Co., Chrysler LLC, and the auto makers’ financing units.

They deserve what they get. You accept socialism, you get to pay the price. Hopefully this will be a lesson that free markets always work. Did you know that the banks that took bail-out money have to pay it back at 9% APR? That’s a humongous amount of money to pay back at a horrible rate.

Yeah, when I was a boy, it was sure nice to have abundant abalone. But then we had abundant everything back then. Even forests that didn’t burn down to the ground. We had deer up the yazoo. Ducks and geese.

Yessir, the environmentalists have pretty much destroyed our environment and way of life.

Over-fishing is a real issue. Just as an example, fishing yields on the Outer Banks have plummeted over the past century.

The west-coast fisheries to which you're referring are primarily salmon, and that's perhaps not a very good analogue to fisheries that rely on species that spend their entire lives in the ocean.

For one thing, salmon runs are affected by the presence of dams. And the sea lions tend to kill off salmon in places where they're constricted and congested, in the rivers, and near dams and locks, rather than in the open ocean.

The ocean is huge, of course, and there are a lot of fish in it. But industrial-scale fishing harvests fish by the millions and billions ... it is bound to affect the population.

I was raised in the South, and I have chosen to make the South my home again as an adult. I’ve tried a couple of other areas and I have chosen the South. Please let me know if that doesn’t clear things up for ya.
