DESTIN — News that a federal agency had slammed the door on this year’s amberjack season without notice didn’t sit well Tuesday with charter fishermen.

They believe Big Brother is out to take their livelihood from them.

“They’re killing us,” said boat captain Thomas Swanson. “They’re flat killing us.”

Not a surprise at all. This group doesn’t want people to make a buck.

At what point will previously law abiding citizens just say forget it and disregard the feds and look after their own local interests?

Oh cheer up! Think about how many carbon credits you will get for NOT catching fish and staying tied to the dock....You just have to wait for the check.

Back in the 60's and 70's we were after red snapper, red grouper, scamp, and black grouper and we were throwing back amberjack and triggerfish as "trash".

My crew called amberjacks "slicks" and we would pull up the lines and leave spots where there were too many amberjacks.

I used to occasionally fish a spot that held huge amberjacks...saved it for when I had a group of "big game" fishermen who just wanted to catch something big. These big jacks could snap a 100 lb test line like it was a rubber band if you had the drag set too tight. A 100 lb plus sized amberjack wouldn't even raise an eyebrow at the docks back then and with the exception of a few who smoked them, most people wouldn't eat one.

Now amberjacks and triggerfish are prized for the excellent food fish they have actually always been.

They are fishing Amberjack now because the Feds closed the Red Snapper season early (oh...you’ve caught too much), no more Red Snapper for thee. You can’t go fishing w/o catching red snapper!

And you know why, too, don't you? Partly because the red snapper, red grouper, scamp, and black grouper have been fished out in a lot of places.

I can't claim any real knowledge of the amberjack population, but over-fishing is a well-known problem.

Just out of curiosity, how is one southern by choice? You were either raised in the South or you weren’t. That’s like a Mexican immigrant saying he’s Mexican by choice; I think God settled that issue without his input.

In 1994 Floridians voted for the unnecessary net ban amendment. This year, the snapper season has been shortened and the amberjack season has been closed. I guess the amendment didn’t work.
