Democrats' hidden gas tax
The Washington Times ^ | 10/21/09 | Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchisen & Sen. Christopher S. Bond

There's something the Democratic lawmakers who are pushing cap-and-trade legislation don't want the public to know. The controversial climate-change legislation winding its way through Congress will impose a massive new national gas tax on the American people. We discovered this by analyzing what the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill would do to gas prices and what Americans spend on gasoline, diesel and jet fuels. We found that cap-and-trade legislation will levy a $3.6 trillion gas-tax increase that will impact every American and important segments of our economy.

Americans travel more than 200 million vehicle miles each month, and annually we spend nearly $1.2 trillion on gasoline and oil. The average household spends 5 percent of its annual budget on fuel. For many, gasoline is a mandatory expense. And this legislation disproportionately hits middle and lower income households that tend to have longer commutes to work and must drive in order to work. These families will be hit especially hard by the projected $1 per gallon increase for the additional gas tax the cap-and-trade legislation will bring.

Oh fabulous! A dollar per gallon. Gee, if it gets a bit windy near the Gulf of Mexico the price of oil skyrockets by dollars per gallon.

No surprise really on the impact on gas from C+T. Wait until we get a gander at our electric bills. Everything we buy will cost more. Cap and Tax will turn the USA into a 3rd world nation. We all knew that when we first heard of this most stupid and destructive of liberal tax and control schemes. Liberal voters are not informed on how this eco-nut, feel good about being “green” Cap and Tax bill will impact their LIVES. They’ll be stunned, we will not. Our warnings will go unheeded.

When the entire economy grinds to a halt, then the dems in power will be happy. The utopia of liberalism will have been achieved. Total destruction of America is their goal. They must be stopped.

I’ve got my eye on a horse sale coming up nearby. I told my husband we may need to buy a couple horses and a buggy to get to/from work, if work still exists then, for when they pass C&T - because we won’t be able to afford the gas to go anywhere in our vehicles.

Seriously though, the dims and enviroterrorists would be quite content if we all went back to the horse and buggy days.

This, as I see it, was the fulcrum of last year's tipping point into economic decline - poor and moderate-income households with mortgages they couldn't really afford had to choose between buying $4.50 a gallon gasoline in order to get to work in their 10-year-old low-MPG beater cars, and paying their mortgage.

I agree. I remember the guy who was from somewhere north, not sure of the state. Anyway he was calling in about his kids I think and how he was a business owner and the real mortgage crisis was people couldn’t afford the energy prices, gas prices, and mortgages all together and that people who had gotten the funny loans, they could have made their payments if it weren’t for the increase in everything else all at once.

I remember when gas was in the $3+ range and I was driving 75 miles per day round trip- it was nothing for us to spend $125 per week on fuel just to get to work. There was no extra spending.

It’s worse than $1 a gallon. It will destroy our economy. Which is the intent, btw.

Of course it’s the intent.... just like the “refugees” from Gitmo, the delay in sending troops to Afghanistan, etc.

We’ve been infiltrated.
