Sideshow 'pandemonium' leaves 3 dead, 3 hurt (Oakland, CA)

Three people died early Saturday when their car flipped during an East Oakland sideshow, a weekly spectacle of reckless driving that residents say is terrorizing neighborhoods and growing increasingly lethal.

"It was pandemonium. Smoke, cars, noise, bodies on the ground," said Chere Turk, who lives in the apartment adjacent to the crash site and was awakened by the chaos. "These sideshows are crazy. It always ends with someone dead."

East Oakland is still reeling from a hit-and-run on Friday that killed 11-year-old Alana Williams as she crossed 64th Avenue to get to school. Alana was struck as she walked in the crosswalk by a car that swerved around the bus she had just exited.

Sideshows have been a ritual in Oakland and other Bay Area cities for at least five years but lately have escalated, residents say. Typically, cars weave and speed along thoroughfares, spinning doughnuts and screeching tires. Passengers often hang out the windows dancing.

"Ghost riding the whip," a term popularized in a 2006 song by Bay Area rapper E-40, is a sideshow stunt in which a driver slows a car to about 10 mph, puts the transmission in neutral and jumps out of the car while it's moving with music blaring. The driver - and passengers - dance alongside the car or jump on the hood or roof, then, if lucky, return to the vehicle.

Another stunt is a "hyphy-train," named after the hip-hop style that originated in Oakland. A hyphy-train is a line of cars weaving and speeding in unison. Witnesses said the Nissan from Saturday's crash was in a hyphy train, but the train continued after the crash.

"It's like a conga line on wheels," said Candy Turk, who lives near the crash site.

This article offers a good primer on "sideshow" culture for those not in the know. Living in a quiet neighborhood myself, I hadn't heard of this before now.

Wow! What a diverse culture that we should all be tolerant of and embrace!

Where was it that a judge impound the cars of illegal street racers and sentenced the driver to watching it crashed into a small block?

The peace and serenity of my neighborhood sure seems to be missing out on this rich diversity.

Otherwise known as "Darwinism in action."

If nothing else, this idiocy indicates a gross over-abundance of luxury in American society...among the lower classes.

All this propaganda BS about “distributive” inequalities and the need for the government (commies in government) to “reform” the “status quo” and work for “economic justice” is just a bunch of communist rhetoric blowing smoke up our a$$es while they destroy our liberty and redistribute our EARNINGS (not our wealth).

Video of sideshow basics:

Driving nuts, driving nuts while dancing and mostly undressed, fighting for no good reason, showing stupid gang-clothing, striking drunk dancing people with one’s car...

CLEAN FUN..!!

We used to do Chinese firedrills at stop lights.
Every one would jump out of the car once it stopped
and run around the car till the light turned green
then scrambled back in side where ever they ended up.
We somehow thought that was great fun.
I have vague memories of being stoned on acid
and riding on the hood of a corvette in a parking lot
with my head hanging over the grill. Everything
was very stretchy, if you know what I’m talking about.

As my good friend the former deputy chief of police
in atlanta says, “It was Pandelirium !”.
(he didn’t know me then, but befriended me later
when I got straightened out.)

Wow. That video is pretty amazing. What is truly amazing is the mass of people blocking a public street with no cops trying to disrupt it.

In my neck of the woods they do “street” racing down in some industrial area in the middle of the night. I’m not sure if it is on the streets or in the long parking lots of the factories. Every once in a while they kill each other with their cars.

Good times.

Yeah we did Chinese Fire drills too...we laughed and ran around the car a few times, then jumped back in before the light turned green.

What the people are doing in these “sideshows” is just retarded idiocy. Pure and simple.

Good God.
